rwia330.dll is a Ricoh WIA scanner-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. When rwia330.dll is missing or cannot load, start by identifying the scanner software and driver package that installed it.

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program shows the error: a Ricoh scanning utility, an imaging application, or another program
  • Whether the message appears when Windows starts, when scanning begins, or when a specific application opens
  • The scanner model, especially whether it is an older Ricoh IS330 device
  • Whether the scanner appears under Device Manager or Printers & scanners
  • Whether the problem began after uninstalling scanner software, removing the device, updating Windows, restoring a backup, cleaning the disk, or running antivirus
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

Public driver records associate rwia330.dll with Ricoh’s WIA driver for the IS330 scanner and the ricoh.inf driver package. Historical records commonly describe it as a 32-bit scanner-driver DLL, but the version and size shown in old file databases are not proof that the same build belongs on every Windows installation.

What the error actually means

WIA is Windows Image Acquisition, the imaging framework used by Windows and scanning applications. Microsoft provides the WIA framework, but scanner manufacturers provide device-specific driver components. A Ricoh WIA driver package supplies the files, INF instructions, device configuration, and registry entries needed to connect the scanner to that framework.

That makes rwia330.dll different from:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable files
  • DirectX files
  • .NET components
  • A generic Windows system DLL
  • A game engine runtime

The file belongs to the program or driver package that installed it. A missing-file message can therefore appear even when Windows itself is working normally.

Common reported messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because RWia330.dll was not found.”
  • “The file RWia330.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: RWia330.dll.”
  • “Error loading RWia330.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “rwia330.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages are symptoms, not proof that the named file alone is the problem. If the DLL is present but a dependency is absent, Windows can still report that the specified module could not be found.

Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the complete Ricoh scanner package

This is the most likely fix. Do not begin by downloading rwia330.dll separately. The scanner driver package must install the correct DLL together with its INF, catalog, dependencies, device settings, and registration information.

Check the installed device

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the Ricoh scanner or an entry with a warning icon.
  5. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and record the device name.
  7. Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date, version, and driver file details.

Also check:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Open Printers & scanners.
  4. Look for the Ricoh scanner or an entry representing the imaging device.

If the scanner is absent from both locations, the issue is probably device detection, connection, or driver installation rather than only a missing DLL.

Remove the damaged software carefully

If the Ricoh scanner utility is listed:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for Ricoh scanner software or the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

Then return to Device Manager. If the scanner remains listed:

  1. Right-click the device.
  2. Choose Uninstall device.
  3. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to reinstall the package.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart the computer.

Some driver files can remain in the Windows Driver Store after a device uninstall. That is normal. Windows may use the retained package when the scanner is rediscovered.

Install from a trusted source

Use, in this order:

  1. The original Ricoh installation CD
  2. An OEM recovery image supplied with the scanner or computer
  3. A driver package supplied by the scanner manufacturer or vendor
  4. A Ricoh support package that explicitly matches the scanner model and Windows version

Identify the exact model before installing anything. Do not substitute an IS420, IS430, IS450, or another similarly named Ricoh package for an IS330 driver.

Current Ricoh documentation still lists IS330 models, but a current official download package containing rwia330.dll has not been established. If the original package is unavailable and no compatible vendor package exists, a supported legacy Windows system or scanner replacement may be more practical than forcing an unverified DLL onto Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Confirm that the scanner has no warning icon.
  4. Open the Ricoh scanning program.
  5. Run a preview scan before attempting a large scan job.

If the error returns immediately, record the full path of the executable that displays it. The calling application may itself be obsolete or damaged.

When you are manually hunting through old driver packages and comparing versions for several devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and the exact Ricoh package remains the definitive fix for this scanner-specific DLL.

Fix 2: Check whether the old driver is compatible

The historical Ricoh component associated with rwia330.dll is a legacy 32-bit WIA driver. A 32-bit application can generally use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, but that does not guarantee that the complete scanner driver supports the operating system.

Check your Windows architecture

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Look at System type.

Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL belongs in a particular folder simply because Windows is 64-bit. The INF package decides where the driver files belong and how the imaging device is configured.

If the scanner worked on Windows XP or Windows 7 and stopped after moving to Windows 10 or Windows 11, compatibility is a serious possibility. Try the following only with a legitimate vendor installer:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Test the Windows version for which the Ricoh package was designed.
  6. Select Apply, then run the installer as administrator.

Compatibility mode cannot create support that the driver does not have. If installation fails, Windows blocks the driver, or the scanner remains unusable, use the scanner with a supported legacy system or replace it rather than copying individual files.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate old driver, or it can correctly block a malicious file pretending to be rwia330.dll.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand any detection related to the Ricoh scanner software.
  5. Review the original file path and detection details.

Restore the file only if you can independently verify that it came from the original Ricoh installation media or a trusted vendor package. If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safer recovery is to uninstall the scanner package, run a full malware scan, and reinstall the complete package from legitimate media. Do not add an unknown DLL to antivirus exclusions.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows servicing is damaged, system files are corrupted, or the error began after a failed update. They are less likely to restore a third-party Ricoh driver that is absent from the current Windows component store.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the scanner again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks and replaces protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the Ricoh INF driver package.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace the Ricoh installer when the vendor driver itself is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair the application that calls the DLL

If the scanner appears correctly in Device Manager but only one program reports the error, the application may be damaged.

  4. Find the affected scanning application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart the application and test again.

If there is no Repair option, uninstall and reinstall the application from its legitimate installation source. If the program is an old 32-bit utility, confirm that it still supports the Windows version and the installed Ricoh driver.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is appropriate when the scanner worked until a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software removal.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Back up important work.
  8. Start the restoration and restart Windows.

System Restore normally changes system settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not repair a physically disconnected scanner or provide a missing vendor installer.

Why copying rwia330.dll is unsafe

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file with no matching driver configuration. Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 may hide the original symptom while leaving the scanner unusable because the INF, catalog, registry entries, and dependent files are still missing.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables merely because a generic DLL page recommends them. rwia330.dll is associated with Ricoh WIA scanner software, not identified as a Microsoft C++ runtime component.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command. Microsoft documents it for registering self-registering ActiveX controls. WIA scanner components are normally installed through a driver package, and there is no verified evidence that this particular DLL provides a self-registration entry point.

If “specified module could not be found” appears

When rwia330.dll is visibly present, the error can indicate that Windows cannot load one of its dependencies. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The full path of rwia330.dll.
  2. The application that is loading it.
  3. The scanner model and driver provider.
  4. The Windows architecture.
  5. Recent entries in Event Viewer under Windows Logs → Application or System.

Do not replace the visible DLL until the complete driver package has been repaired. If the error persists after a correct reinstall, the missing component may be an old dependency or the application may no longer be compatible with the operating system.

FAQ

Is rwia330.dll a Windows system file?

No. Historical records place copies in Windows component and driver locations, but its identity is tied to a Ricoh WIA scanner driver. That does not make it a core Windows DLL.

Is it part of Microsoft WIA?

It is a vendor component used with the WIA framework. Microsoft supplies the imaging infrastructure; Ricoh supplies device-specific driver behavior.

Which scanner uses it?

Public records strongly associate it with the Ricoh IS330 and the ricoh.inf package. Confirm the exact model before installing a replacement driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No, not as a routine fix. Reinstall the complete scanner driver package instead.

Can SFC restore it?

SFC can repair protected Windows components. It may not restore a missing Ricoh DLL unless the relevant payload is part of the Windows image. A Ricoh package reinstall is the primary repair.

What if the scanner is no longer detected?

Check the USB connection, Device Manager, scanner power, and the correct model-specific driver. If the legacy driver does not support Windows 10 or Windows 11, use a supported older system or replace the scanner.
