The five NVIDIA App checks worth making first are: decide whether game optimization should control your settings, enable the performance overlay, configure refresh rate and VRR correctly, test HDR and color filters carefully, and review per-game DLSS, driver, and capture settings. These are not universal FPS-boost switches. The right choices depend on your GPU, game, monitor, laptop configuration, and whether you value image quality, latency, smoothness, or convenience.
The NVIDIA App now combines much of the functionality previously split between GeForce Experience and the NVIDIA Control Panel. It supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, with NVIDIA listing 2GB of system memory, 600MB of storage, GeForce driver 551.52 or later, and compatible GeForce RTX, GTX, and MX hardware among its requirements. Features vary by GPU generation, driver, game, display, and system configuration. See NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App FAQ for current compatibility details.

Before changing anything: measure your baseline
Change one setting at a time and test the same game scene before and after. Record average FPS, frame-time consistency, GPU utilization, temperature, clock speed, and responsiveness. A higher FPS counter does not automatically mean a better experience: frame pacing, latency, tearing, image quality, and stability matter too.
The app’s labels can move between releases, so treat the paths below as the current layout rather than permanent interface guarantees.

1. Decide whether Optimize should control your games
Path: Graphics > select a game > Optimize
NVIDIA App optimization evaluates your GPU, CPU, and display, then applies NVIDIA’s recommended in-game settings to balance image quality and performance. It is useful as a quick baseline when you have installed a game, changed hardware, or do not want to tune dozens of options manually.
Use Optimize if you want convenience. Afterward, open the game and recheck its resolution, upscaling mode, ray-tracing settings, frame-rate limit, HDR mode, and motion-blur preferences. Optimization is a recommendation, not a benchmark result, and it cannot perfectly account for your preferred visual quality, competitive latency target, CPU bottleneck, or hard frame-rate cap.
If you manually tune your games, disable or ignore automatic optimization. It may overwrite settings you deliberately selected. Before experimenting, take screenshots or note your preferred configuration. If you dislike the result, restore the game’s settings manually or use its reset-to-default option.

The app may not detect every launcher, executable, portable installation, or game patched after the recommendation was created. Revisit the profile after a major patch, driver update, resolution change, monitor upgrade, or GPU replacement. Optimization can change settings without improving performance when the game is CPU-limited, capped, or restricted by a laptop’s power and thermal limits.
2. Enable the performance overlay before tuning anything else
Path: Settings > Features > In-Game Overlay
Turn on the overlay, then press Alt+R to show or hide the performance display. Press Alt+Shift+R to cycle through metric layouts. To change shortcuts, open Alt+Z > Settings > Shortcuts. The overlay’s statistics can be selected under Alt+Z > Statistics > Configure heads up display.
NVIDIA says the overlay can display FPS, GPU clocks, GPU temperature, and other performance information on supported GeForce RTX and GTX 600-series-and-newer hardware. Start with:
- FPS
- GPU utilization
- GPU temperature
- GPU clock
- CPU utilization, where available
- Frame-time or latency indicators, where supported
Use the readings diagnostically:
- Low GPU utilization: the CPU, a frame cap, a background process, or a power-management issue may be limiting performance.
- GPU utilization near maximum: lower demanding visual settings, use a supported upscaler, reduce ray tracing, or accept that the GPU is the limiting component.
- High temperature followed by falling clocks: investigate cooling, airflow, fan behavior, laptop power profiles, or thermal limits.
- High FPS but poor responsiveness: check frame pacing, VRR, frame generation, latency settings, and competing overlays.
For troubleshooting, temporarily reduce unnecessary overlay elements. Do not assume an overlay has zero performance cost; if unexplained stutter disappears when overlays are disabled, you have useful evidence about the cause.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Correct refresh rate, G-SYNC, Reflex, and V-SYNC behavior
This is often more important than a global driver toggle. First set Windows to the monitor’s intended refresh rate, then confirm the game is using the correct resolution and display mode. Check the monitor’s own menu and verify that G-SYNC or another compatible variable-refresh-rate mode is enabled when appropriate.
Higher refresh rates reduce scanout latency, but the best synchronization policy depends on your display and priorities. NVIDIA’s system-latency guide explains the relevant trade-offs.
Choose the policy that matches your priority
- Lowest possible latency: V-SYNC off can reduce synchronization delay, but tearing may become visible.
- Tear-free play: G-SYNC or compatible VRR with a suitable frame cap can provide smoother presentation. V-SYNC may be used with VRR, with a small latency trade-off.
- Competitive games: prioritize stable frame times and test the game’s actual behavior rather than applying a blanket “V-SYNC off” rule.
- Cinematic or single-player games: tear-free VRR and consistent pacing may be preferable to chasing the lowest possible latency.
If the game supports NVIDIA Reflex, enable Reflex in the game first. NVIDIA states that Reflex overrides the driver’s Ultra Low Latency Mode when both are enabled, so they are not additive performance boosts. If Reflex is unavailable, you can consider Ultra Low Latency Mode in the per-game driver profile.

RTX HDR uses an AI-based process to create an HDR effect for games that do not provide satisfactory native HDR. RTX Dynamic Vibrance changes the appearance of game imagery to make colors and visual separation more pronounced. They are RTX-accelerated features whose availability depends on the GPU, driver, game, display, and Windows setup. NVIDIA documents current support in its NVIDIA App FAQ.
These are image-preference tools, not guaranteed performance upgrades. RTX HDR also requires an HDR-capable display and correctly configured Windows HDR output. Monitor peak brightness, local dimming, black levels, calibration, and tone mapping can matter more than the toggle itself.
Use one HDR path at a time where possible
- Test the game’s native HDR mode first.
- For a game without good native HDR, test RTX HDR.
- Compare Windows Auto HDR only if it produces a better result on your display.
- Temporarily disable other HDR conversion layers while comparing.
Judge dark scenes, bright highlights, UI readability, skin tones, shadow detail, and color clipping. A setting that looks impressive in a bright scene may crush blacks or overexpose highlights elsewhere. Captured screenshots and video may not accurately represent what you see on an HDR monitor.
Dynamic Vibrance is subjective. Disable it if colors look oversaturated, enemies become visually distracting, or accurate color reproduction matters more than a stylized image. Competitive players should test whether the altered image genuinely improves visibility without compromising clarity.

5. Review per-game DLSS features, driver maintenance, and capture defaults
DLSS Override
Path: Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings
On supported hardware and games, NVIDIA App can expose DLSS Override controls that update a game to newer DLSS features or models. Review the available option for each supported title and apply it per game rather than globally when possible. Restart the game if the change is not detected. To undo it, return the profile to the default or use 3D application setting.
No visible change does not necessarily mean the feature is broken. The game may be unsupported, use a modified or nonstandard DLSS implementation, already use a newer model, require a restart, or be affected by the installed driver or app version.
Smooth Motion and frame generation
NVIDIA advertises Smooth Motion for GeForce RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs, subject to game, driver, and app support. It generates additional displayed frames; it does not make the original rendered frames arrive faster or turn generated FPS into equivalent native input response.
Smooth Motion is most useful when the base frame rate is already reasonably stable. Compare motion clarity, HUD stability, particles, fast camera movement, disoccluded objects, input response, and frame-time behavior—not just the FPS number. Disable it per game if artifacts appear. Prefer a well-supported in-game frame-generation implementation when one is available, especially when it offers better game-engine integration.

As of 2026, NVIDIA App beta coverage has reported support for DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50-series cards, including per-game or global controls in supported scenarios. Beta availability and labels can change, so confirm that the control exists in your installed app rather than assuming every RTX 50-series system has it.
Choose a driver branch and keep rollback in mind
Path: Drivers
For a gaming-first PC, Game Ready is normally the appropriate branch because it targets new game support. Choose Studio when creative-app stability and certification are your main priorities while gaming remains secondary.
Before installing, read the release notes, fixes, and game-support information. A new driver may improve one title while causing stutter, crashes, corruption, or another regression elsewhere. NVIDIA says the app provides driver management and rollback to a previously installed driver. If a reproducible problem starts immediately after updating, roll back and retest with overlays and filters disabled.
Set up recording only if you use it
Path: Alt+Z > Settings > Video Capture
Set a storage folder on a drive with sufficient free space, choose a sensible Instant Replay duration, and change hotkeys that conflict with games. Select H.264 or AV1 according to your hardware, editor, playback devices, and sharing destination. AV1 generally offers better compression efficiency, but compatibility varies. NVIDIA lists high-resolution HDR recording capabilities on supported systems, including up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps; RTX 40-series GPUs support AV1 recording according to the product page.
Higher resolution, frame rate, HDR, and bitrate increase storage use and may affect frame pacing on some systems. Turn off Instant Replay if you never use it. Some games, protected content, and anti-cheat environments can restrict capture.
Quick NVIDIA App checklist
| Area | Recommended action | Use this when |
|---|---|---|
| Game optimization | Use as a baseline, or leave disabled for manual tuning | You want convenience or a starting point |

Troubleshooting
The overlay does not appear
- Confirm
Settings > Features > In-Game Overlayis enabled. - Make sure the NVIDIA App is running and restart the game after changing the setting.
- Check whether the game blocks overlays.
- Ensure another application has not claimed the shortcut.
- Check for simultaneous NVIDIA App and GeForce NOW overlays.
- Update the app and driver, then test again.
NVIDIA documents overlay availability and troubleshooting in its In-Game Performance and Latency Overlay support article.
Optimize changed my settings
Turn off automatic optimization, restore your preferred values in the game, and avoid applying Optimize again unless you want to replace that profile. Save screenshots of custom settings before experimenting.

DLSS Override has no effect
Confirm that the game, driver, and app version support the option; apply it to the correct executable; check for a per-game setting overriding a global one; and restart the game. The title may already use a newer or incompatible model.
Smooth Motion introduces artifacts
Disable it for that game and compare native rendering or the game’s own frame-generation mode. Pay attention to HUDs, particles, fast movement, input response, and frame pacing rather than relying only on the FPS counter.

A driver update caused problems
Use the app’s rollback option where available, reproduce the issue with filters and overlays disabled, and keep the prior driver until the affected game or driver receives a fix. “Newest” does not always mean “best” for every game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLaptop performance does not improve
Test while plugged in, select the manufacturer’s performance profile, and check hybrid graphics or Optimus/MUX routing. Battery mode, external-monitor connections, thermal limits, and manufacturer power policies can prevent a software setting from producing more performance.
What the NVIDIA App does not replace
NVIDIA has moved many mainstream GeForce controls into the NVIDIA App, but the classic NVIDIA Control Panel can remain available, including through the Microsoft Store, for legacy workflows, troubleshooting, and some professional or Quadro-related features. Do not assume it has disappeared from every PC or that every setting has identical coverage in both interfaces. Current context on the transition is available from Tom’s Hardware.
For repeatable, deeper benchmarking, NVIDIA’s free FrameView utility may be more appropriate than the built-in overlay. For camera and microphone processing, NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate option. Neither is necessary for ordinary FPS checks.
Download the NVIDIA App
Compatible GeForce owners can get the free app from NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App page. An NVIDIA account is optional for the app’s core use, although some features or services may offer account-based functionality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use NVIDIA App Optimize?
Use it as a baseline if you want convenience, then review the game’s settings. If you manually tune games, leave optimization disabled or ignore it so it does not overwrite your choices.
Does turning off V-SYNC increase FPS?
V-SYNC mainly changes synchronization and latency behavior; it does not increase the GPU’s underlying rendering capability. Turning it off can reduce latency but may introduce tearing.
Is Smooth Motion the same as native FPS?
No. Smooth Motion generates displayed frames. It can improve perceived smoothness, but input response remains tied largely to the original rendered frames and artifacts may occur.
Why is RTX HDR not available?
Availability depends on the GPU, driver, app version, game, Windows HDR configuration, and HDR-capable display. Even when available, results depend heavily on the monitor and may be worse than native HDR.

The Bottom Line
The best NVIDIA App setup is measured rather than blindly copied: use Optimize only as a starting point, enable the overlay, configure your actual monitor and latency goals, test HDR filters, and apply DLSS, frame-generation, driver, and recording features per game. There is no five-setting combination that universally increases FPS, but these checks can make a GeForce PC easier to tune, troubleshoot, and maintain.
