Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, revealed its full launch details on April 2, and released it on June 5, 2025. It is no longer an upcoming console. The US launch MSRP was $449.99 before tax, while Nintendo announced a revised $499.99 MSRP scheduled to take effect September 1, 2026.

The important question now is not whether Switch 2 exists, but whether its larger screen, faster hardware, new features and broad—though not universal—Switch-game compatibility justify the upgrade.

What Nintendo actually confirmed

Nintendo’s January announcement was the formal confirmation. It named the product Nintendo Switch 2, described it as the successor to Nintendo Switch, showed the hardware in a first-look video and said it would launch in 2025. Nintendo also confirmed that the system would play Switch 2-exclusive games alongside compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.

That was not the same as a complete technical unveiling. Nintendo provided the release date, pricing, specifications, games and major features during its April 2, 2025 presentation. The commercial release followed on June 5, 2025. The timeline is therefore:

Release date and price

Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. In the United States, its launch MSRP was $449.99 before tax. For the date covered by the supplied research—August 18, 2026—that remained the pre-increase MSRP, but Nintendo had announced that the US price would rise to $499.99 before tax on September 1, 2026. Check the current price before buying because retailer pricing, stock and bundles can differ.

Nintendo also announced a Japanese bundle containing a digital copy of Mario Kart World for ¥53,980. That yen price is not a US price and should not be converted into a US recommendation without region-specific pricing.

What changed in the hardware?

Switch 2 is a larger, more capable version of the hybrid-console design, but its headline performance figures are maximums rather than guarantees for every game.

Feature Switch 2 specification What it means
Handheld display 7.9-inch LCD Larger than the original Switch display.
Resolution 1920×1080 Sharper handheld output.
Display features HDR10 and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz Only supported games and compatible displays can take full advantage of these features.
Storage 256GB internal storage More room for games, though some capacity is reserved for system use.
Processor Custom NVIDIA processor Nintendo says CPU and GPU performance are significantly improved.
Wireless Wi-Fi 6 Updated wireless connectivity.
Ports Two USB-C ports Useful for charging and supported accessories.
Battery Approximately 2–6.5 hours Actual life depends on the game and how the system is used.
Charging Approximately three hours Nintendo’s approximate charging time.
TV output Up to 3840×2160 at 60fps “Up to 4K” requires a compatible TV and game; it does not mean every game renders natively at 4K.
Higher frame rates Up to 120fps at 1080p or 1440p Requires a compatible game and display and is not standard across the library.

Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion, with support up to 2TB. An old standard microSD card is not a drop-in replacement: Nintendo says non-Express cards can be used on Switch 2 only for copying screenshots and videos, not as full game storage.

Joy-Con 2 and accessories

The redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers are larger, attach magnetically and can act as a mouse in supported games. Mouse functionality is game-dependent, not a universal replacement for a traditional controller.

Original Joy-Con controllers can be paired wirelessly with Switch 2 for supported uses, but Joy-Con 2 cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch. Older accessories also need checking individually. Ring-Con, the Leg Strap, Joy-Con wheels and some other accessories may require original Joy-Con.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power Switch 2 TV mode through the Switch 2 dock because the power output differs. Do not assume that an old dock, charger, grip or accessory will transfer without limitations.

Backward compatibility: broadly yes, not universally

Switch 2 can play many compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The crucial word is compatible: Nintendo warns that some games may be unsupported or may not work fully. For third-party games, Nintendo directs owners to the publisher for title-specific information. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before assuming a particular game or feature will work.

Physical games

Many original Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2. Compatibility can still vary by title, peripheral and game mode.

Digital purchases and accounts

Nintendo Accounts, eShop funds, downloadable software and virtual game cards can carry across linked systems. This makes moving an existing digital library substantially easier, but it does not remove title-specific compatibility limits.

Virtual Game Cards

Virtual Game Cards organize eligible digital purchases associated with a Nintendo Account. Nintendo says a virtual game card can be loaded onto up to two systems at once, and eligible digital games can be lent within a Nintendo Account Family Group for up to 14 days.

New features beyond faster hardware

GameChat

GameChat supports voice communication, video chat and game-screen sharing with approved friends. Video features require a compatible USB camera. Children under 16 require parental or guardian approval through the updated Parental Controls app.

The launch open-access period ended on March 31, 2026. After that date, Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for GameChat. Do not rely on launch-era descriptions that call the feature permanently free. Nintendo Switch Online also matters to players interested in online features and the GameCube library. See the official Nintendo Switch Online page.

GameCube classics

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers on Switch 2 get access to a Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo announced initial titles including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SOULCALIBUR II and F-ZERO GX.

What existing Switch owners should budget for

  • The console: Use the region’s current price, remembering the US MSRP change from $449.99 to $499.99 scheduled for September 1, 2026.
  • Storage: Digital-heavy owners should plan for a microSD Express card rather than reusing a standard microSD card for games.
  • Camera: A compatible USB camera is sold separately if you want GameChat video features.
  • Controller: Joy-Con 2 are included, but a Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional consideration for TV-mode or traditional-controller players.
  • Online membership: GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online after March 31, 2026, and Expansion Pack is needed for the GameCube classics library.
  • Accessories: Check Ring-Con, Leg Strap, wheels, docks, chargers and other peripherals individually.

Should you upgrade?

Switch 2 makes the strongest case if you:

  • Want Switch 2-exclusive games.
  • Play primarily in handheld mode and value the larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen.
  • Need more internal storage than the original Switch provides.
  • Want improved loading, graphics or frame rates where individual games support them.
  • Plan to use GameChat, GameShare, mouse-capable Joy-Con 2 or the GameCube classics library.
  • Want to buy before the announced US MSRP increase, subject to retailer stock and actual selling prices.

Keeping the original Switch may be sensible if you:

  • Mainly play your existing library and it already meets your needs.
  • Do not need Switch 2-exclusive software or its newer social features.
  • Want to avoid the console’s higher price and possible storage or accessory replacements.
  • Rely on older peripherals whose Switch 2 compatibility is incomplete or uncertain.
  • Expect every Switch game, mode and accessory to work identically; Nintendo does not promise that.

Before buying, check the specific games and accessories you use most. “Backward compatible” describes broad support, not a guarantee that every title, peripheral or feature transfers perfectly.

The bottom line

Nintendo confirmed Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, fully detailed it on April 2 and launched it on June 5, 2025. The released console offers a larger 1080p HDR display, 256GB storage, improved hardware, Joy-Con 2 and new features such as GameChat and GameShare. It also supports many physical and digital Switch games, but compatibility is not universal.
