DLSS 3 Frame Generation can raise the number of frames shown on screen by synthesizing images between game-rendered frames. That displayed rate is not the same as the game’s underlying rendered rate, however, and it does not by itself tell you how responsive the controls feel or whether generated frames introduce visual artifacts. Digital Foundry’s October 2022 analysis focused on those distinctions; its available chapter listing identifies the questions tested, but does not provide results that can be quoted as numerical benchmarks.
What DLSS 3 Frame Generation does
At launch, NVIDIA described DLSS 3 as three related but distinct technologies:

- Frame Generation synthesizes an additional frame using current and previous game frames, an optical-flow field, and game-engine data such as motion vectors and depth.
- Super Resolution reconstructs image detail from a lower-resolution rendered image.
- Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU work to reduce system latency.
Frame Generation is therefore not simply a way to render every frame twice as fast. Some frames on screen are generated from information in other frames rather than separately rendered by the game. NVIDIA’s launch-era requirement for Frame Generation was a GeForce RTX 40 Series GPU; that historical requirement should not be treated as a statement about compatibility in later DLSS generations.
Why generated frames can differ from rendered frames
Optical flow helps estimate how image content moves between frames. NVIDIA says it can capture pixel-level effects—including shadows, reflections, particles and lighting—that conventional engine motion vectors may not describe. The technique must still infer what belongs between the available images. NVIDIA’s Ada architecture paper acknowledges potential reconstruction problems including ghosting, stutter and blur, especially when effects lack the same motion information as scene geometry.

What the early Digital Foundry analysis examined
Digital Foundry published its analysis on October 12, 2022. The chapter listing points to a broad set of test conditions rather than a single FPS comparison:
- Capture and synchronization: 4K/120Hz capture methodology and whether DLSS 3 works with V-Sync.
- Lower frame rates: whether Frame Generation looks good or works well when the starting frame rate is lower.
- Motion and transitions: cyclical animation, scene transitions, camera cuts and disocclusion during erratic mouse movement.
- Fine image detail: HUD elements, thin transparency and rapid flashes.
- Latency and output: latency analysis and comparison with 4K/120 output.
The available chapter information establishes what the analysis set out to investigate, not numerical outcomes. It does not support attributing a particular FPS figure or latency measurement to Digital Foundry.

How to interpret a DLSS 3 performance comparison
A useful evaluation keeps four questions separate. A displayed-frame counter answers only part of the first one; it cannot establish control responsiveness or image quality by itself.
| Dimension | What to distinguish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rendered versus displayed rate | The game’s underlying rendered frames versus the total frames displayed after generated frames are added. | A higher displayed rate does not mean every displayed frame was independently rendered by the game. |
| Input responsiveness | How quickly the game responds to input, considered separately from the displayed frame count. | Frame rate alone does not measure latency or tell you how controls feel. |
| Image stability | Motion, interface elements, scene changes, thin or transparent detail, flashes and newly revealed areas. | These are situations in which an interpolated image may be harder to reconstruct cleanly. |
| Synchronization and capture | Conditions such as V-Sync, display refresh and capture method. | Results depend on the output and synchronization conditions being examined. |
For a fair comparison, identify whether a quoted rate is rendered or displayed, keep latency as a separate measure, and note the visual and synchronization conditions. A 4K/120Hz capture setup, for example, describes an output and test condition; a 4K 120Hz monitor is not itself a DLSS requirement.

How to read NVIDIA’s launch performance claims
NVIDIA’s 2022 launch materials advertised performance gains of up to 4x in particular comparisons against traditional or brute-force rendering. The figure is a vendor claim tied to NVIDIA’s stated comparison, not a result guaranteed in every game or at every starting frame rate. NVIDIA also advertised up to 2x lower latency for its described comparison. That, too, is a vendor claim, not an independent general measurement.
NVIDIA’s launch announcement said more than 35 games and applications had announced DLSS 3 support. That is a launch-era announcement count, not a current support total. The figures should not be read as independent Digital Foundry findings: the available listing for its analysis provides no numerical result to report.
