The 4090 leads by roughly 19% in Tom’s Hardware’s cited 4K raster aggregate and about 26% in its ray-tracing aggregate, while offering 24GB of VRAM instead of 16GB. The RTX 4080 Super uses substantially less power and made far more sense at its $999 launch MSRP. In 2026, however, both are previous-generation cards, and scarcity has pushed remaining prices far above MSRP in some listings.
Buy the RTX 4090 if you need maximum 4K performance, demanding ray tracing, or more than 16GB of graphics memory. Buy the RTX 4080 Super if it is available near its original price and your workloads fit within 16GB. If either card costs more than a comparable current-generation GPU, skip both.

The GeForce RTX 4090 launched on October 12, 2022, while the GeForce RTX 4080 Super launched on January 31, 2024. Both use NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace architecture and support the same broad generation of gaming, ray-tracing, AI, display, and video features.
#1 Best Overall
- 16,384 NVIDIA CUDA Cores
- Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and variable refresh rate as indicated in HDMI 2.1A
- New streaming multiprocessors: up to 2x power and power efficiency
- Fourth generation tensor cores: up to 2x AI power
- Third-generation RT cores: up to 2x ray tracing performance
They are not equivalent products with different clock speeds. The RTX 4090 is the flagship AD102 card; the RTX 4080 Super is a lower-tier AD103 card. The 4090 has 60% more CUDA cores, 50% more VRAM, a wider memory bus, more memory bandwidth, and a considerably higher power limit. Its reference boost clock is actually slightly lower, so its advantage comes from having substantially more hardware rather than from a higher advertised frequency.
Gaming performance
4K rasterized gaming
The RTX 4090 is generally faster, but the difference is not a fixed percentage in every game. At 4K with demanding settings, the GPU is more likely to be the limiting component, allowing the 4090’s additional shader resources and bandwidth to show their advantage.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy lists a 4K rasterized average of 112.3 for the RTX 4090 and 94.3 for the RTX 4080 Super. That is approximately a 19% advantage for the 4090 in that test framework, not a universal promise for every game or configuration. See the Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy for the cited aggregate.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The RTX 4080 Super is nevertheless a high-end 4K card. It is not accurate to describe it as incapable of 4K gaming. It can deliver strong results at 4K, although the RTX 4090 provides more headroom for demanding releases, ultra settings, high refresh rates, and future games.
Ray tracing and path tracing
The 4090’s lead is usually larger in ray-traced workloads because it has more RT-capable hardware and more overall compute resources. Tom’s Hardware lists ray-tracing averages of 87.7 for the RTX 4090 and 69.5 for the RTX 4080 Super, roughly a 26% difference in that suite.
Full path tracing can widen the practical gap further in especially demanding games, but results depend on the title, resolution, driver, settings, upscaling mode, and whether features such as Ray Reconstruction are enabled. A buyer targeting 4K ray tracing at high refresh rates should favor the 4090 when the price premium is reasonable.
DLSS and Frame Generation
Both cards support DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and NVIDIA Reflex. DLSS can improve the displayed frame rate on either GPU, but it does not make the cards equivalent. The 4090 still has more native rendering performance and more VRAM.
Frame-generation output should also be interpreted separately from conventionally rendered frames. It can increase the displayed frame rate, but it does not represent the same thing as doubling the GPU’s native rendering performance and can have different latency and motion-response characteristics. Compare native or conventionally rendered performance as well as generated-frame results.
1440p and CPU limitations
At 1440p, and especially at 1080p, the RTX 4090’s advantage can be hidden by the CPU. This is most apparent in esports games or other titles already running at very high frame rates. A high-refresh display and a modern, fast processor are more likely to expose the 4090’s advantage.
For a 4K buyer, 4K benchmarks are more useful than 1080p figures. A 4090 upgrade may deliver little improvement if the processor, game engine, memory configuration, or display is the real bottleneck.
VRAM: 16GB versus 24GB
The RTX 4090 has 24GB of GDDR6X; the RTX 4080 Super has 16GB. The 4090 also has more memory bandwidth, not merely more capacity. This matters for 4K ultra textures, heavily modded games, demanding ray tracing, large 3D scenes, high-resolution video work, local AI image generation, and other applications that need to keep large assets in GPU memory.
That does not mean 16GB is universally inadequate. Many games run well within 16GB, particularly at 1440p and conventional 4K settings. The better distinction is workload-based: 16GB remains sufficient for many gaming systems, while 24GB gives the 4090 substantially more margin for unusually large textures, mods, AI models, and creator projects.
VRAM capacity is not the same as performance. A workload can fit in 16GB but still run faster on the 4090 because of its additional compute resources. Conversely, a workload that exceeds 16GB may suffer severe performance problems on the 4080 Super even when its raw speed would otherwise be adequate.

Power, cooling, connectors, and case fit
NVIDIA rates the RTX 4080 Super at 320W total graphics power and the RTX 4090 at 450W. NVIDIA recommends a 750W system power supply for the 4080 Super and 850W for the 4090. These are baseline recommendations; the appropriate choice also depends on the CPU, PSU quality, overclocking, transient behavior, and the specific partner card.
The 4090 therefore needs more cooling capacity, case airflow, and tolerance for heat and noise. It also makes CPU balance more important. Both Founders Edition cards are listed at 304mm long and three slots wide, but many add-in-board models are longer or thicker. Check the exact card’s dimensions, slot clearance, radiator clearance, and support bracket requirements before buying.

16-pin power connection
Both cards use a 16-pin auxiliary power connection or an adapter arrangement involving multiple PCIe 8-pin cables. Installation matters:
- Use the cable supplied with the card or one approved for the exact PSU and GPU.
- Fully seat the connector until it is secure.
- Avoid sharply bending the cable immediately at the plug.
- Follow the board partner’s cable-routing instructions.
- Use a native, correctly rated PCIe Gen 5 cable when the PSU supports it.
Earlier RTX 4090 connector incidents make this worth checking carefully, but they do not mean every 4090 is inherently unsafe. The relevant risk is poor seating, unsuitable cabling, or excessive bending, not simply ownership of the model. NVIDIA provides related power guidance through its support documentation.

The two cards share the important Ada-era feature set: DLSS, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, Reflex, Broadcast, AV1 encoding and decoding, dual eighth-generation NVENC encoders, CUDA 8.9, Game Ready and Studio drivers, Resizable BAR, and G-SYNC-related display support. Neither card unlocks a fundamentally different gaming software ecosystem.
Both support dual NVENC and AV1 encoding, so the 4090 is not automatically better for ordinary streaming or recording merely because it is faster. For those workloads, the encoder, software settings, CPU, storage, and platform may matter more.

However, professional applications vary. Performance can be limited by software support, driver certification, CPU speed, storage, PCIe transfers, VRAM allocation, or whether the application can use the whole GPU.
Price and availability in 2026
Launch pricing no longer provides a complete buying recommendation. The RTX 4080 Super launched at $999, compared with $1,599 for the RTX 4090. At those prices, the 4080 Super was the clear value option and the 4090 was a premium purchase for maximum performance and VRAM.
A Tom’s Hardware US price snapshot crawled in July 2026 listed a best price of approximately $1,459 for the RTX 4080 Super and approximately $3,495 for the RTX 4090, while warning that RTX 40-series production had ended and remaining stock was scarce. These are dated snapshot figures, not guaranteed live prices. See the price-tracking report before treating any listing as current.
When comparing a listing, record whether it is new, used, refurbished, or marketplace stock; the retailer; warranty coverage; return policy; shipping and tax; and the date checked. A 4080 Super priced far above $999 may be a poor buy, while a used 4090 may be worthwhile only after checking its condition and warranty. Do not compare a used 4090 directly with a new 4080 Super without accounting for those differences.

Which card should you buy?
Choose the RTX 4090 if:
- You want the highest possible 4K frame rates.
- You use a 4K 144Hz-or-faster display and play demanding AAA games.
- You prioritize heavy ray tracing or path tracing.
- You use VR or multiple high-resolution displays.
- Your games or applications can exceed 16GB of VRAM.
- You perform CUDA, AI, rendering, or other workloads that benefit from extra compute and memory.
- You have a suitable PSU, case, cooling setup, and CPU.
- The card costs only modestly more than a comparable 4080 Super and has trustworthy warranty coverage.
Choose the RTX 4080 Super if:
- You want strong 4K performance with lower power consumption.
- You play at 1440p or ordinary 4K settings.
- You value efficiency, simpler cooling, and potentially lower noise.
- Your games and applications fit comfortably within 16GB.
- The RTX 4090 is carrying a large scarcity premium.
- You are building around a smaller case or a lower-power platform.
- You can buy it near its $999 launch MSRP or at a materially lower price than the 4090.
Consider neither card if:
- A current-generation RTX 50-series card offers similar performance at a similar or lower price.
- Either card costs more than a newer equivalent.
- Your PSU, case, or CPU is not appropriate.
- You mainly play CPU-limited esports games.
- You need certified professional drivers or support that GeForce does not provide.
- You need more than 24GB of VRAM, in which case a workstation or professional GPU may be more suitable.
NVIDIA’s Blackwell documentation identifies the RTX 5090 as a newer-generation successor-class product. In the 2026 market, that makes the 4090 and 4080 Super worth considering only when their actual prices and availability compete sensibly with newer alternatives. AMD’s current-generation Radeon cards may also offer attractive raster value, but they are not automatic substitutes for CUDA, OptiX, NVIDIA-specific AI tools, or NVENC-focused production workflows.
Final verdict
The RTX 4090 remains the better graphics card technically: it is faster, handles demanding ray tracing more comfortably, and has 24GB of VRAM. The RTX 4080 Super is the better purchase when it is priced sensibly because it delivers high-end 4K performance with much lower power consumption.
Use this price-sensitive rule: if the 4080 Super is near $999 and the 4090 is dramatically more expensive, buy the 4080 Super. If the 4090 is only modestly more expensive and you need maximum 4K performance, ray tracing, or VRAM, buy the 4090. If either card costs more than a comparable newer GPU, buy the newer card instead.
