For the common Astro A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR setup, connect the MixAmp to your PC with a data-capable Micro-USB cable, connect the A40 through its inline mute cable, switch the MixAmp to PC mode, and assign ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game to game audio and ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice to communications and microphone input. Optical audio is optional, not mandatory.

If you own only the A40 headset, skip the MixAmp instructions and connect it directly to a compatible combined headset jack or to separate headphone and microphone ports with an appropriate splitter.

  • A40 headset only: You have no external volume knob or Game/Voice mixer. The headset connects through 3.5-mm audio connections.
  • A40 TR plus MixAmp Pro TR: The MixAmp has a large volume knob and Game/Voice balance controls. It connects to the PC as a USB audio interface and exposes separate Game and Voice devices in Windows.
  • Older A40 or MixAmp generation: Port labels, firmware utilities, cables, and software support may differ. The procedure below is primarily for A40 TR with MixAmp Pro TR, especially Gen 3 and Gen 4 hardware.

When in doubt, look for the MixAmp. If you have one, follow the MixAmp setup. If you do not, use the direct-to-PC section.

What you need for an A40 TR and MixAmp

  • Astro A40 TR headset
  • Compatible MixAmp TR or MixAmp Pro TR
  • Micro-USB data and power cable
  • A40 inline mute cable
  • Optional optical/TOSLINK cable if your PC has an optical output

These are the components identified in Logitech’s A40 TR and MixAmp PC setup instructions. A charge-only Micro-USB cable can power the MixAmp without providing reliable data communication, so use a known-good data cable if Windows does not detect it.

Recommended method: USB-only setup

USB-only is the best starting point for most current PCs and laptops. It avoids the need for an optical output, keeps the wiring simple, and supports the MixAmp’s Game and Voice endpoints for audio and chat.

1. Connect the hardware

  1. Connect the Micro-USB end of the cable to the MixAmp.
  2. Connect the USB end directly to the PC, preferably without a passive USB hub.
  3. Plug the inline mute cable into the A40 headset.
  4. Plug the other end of the inline cable into the MixAmp’s front headset port.
  5. Raise the MixAmp volume knob slightly.

For the cable layout and PC-mode procedure, see Logitech’s Gen 4 quick-start guide. Cable bundles can vary by A40 generation and platform edition, so do not assume every package contains identical accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Switch the MixAmp to PC mode

Hold the MixAmp power button for approximately 3–5 seconds. The indicator should change to white.

Indicator Likely state What to do
White PC mode Continue with Windows configuration.
Red Console mode Hold the power button for about 3–5 seconds to switch to PC mode.
No light No power, USB problem, or possible hardware fault Try another USB port and a different data-capable Micro-USB cable.

Logitech also documents the red and white mode indicators in its A40 TR and MixAmp troubleshooting guide.

Configure Windows audio devices

Windows may show the devices in either the modern Settings interface or the classic Sound Control Panel. Both can be used.

Modern Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under output, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game.
  3. Under input, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice.
  4. Open the additional sound settings or classic Sound Control Panel if you need to assign default communications devices separately.

Classic Sound Control Panel

  1. Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Sound.
  2. On the Playback tab, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game and choose Set Default.
  3. Select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice and choose Set as Default Communication Device.
  4. On the Recording tab, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice and set it as the default recording and communications device where those options are available.

These assignments match Logitech’s documented Gen 4 configuration. Game is intended for game and system audio, while Voice is intended for chat and communications. The MixAmp’s Game/Voice balance control can adjust those streams independently only when applications are actually using the separate endpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not set every application to Voice. Sending game audio to Voice can undermine the Game/Voice mixer and produce confusing volume behavior.

  • Up to 15m wireless range: Removing the boundaries of wires, the 2.4 GHz wireless signal provides a range of up to 15m
  • Cross-platform connectivity: With our new USB transmitter, you can easily connect cross-platform between console and PC; separately sold console-specific USB transmitters allow for cross-console compatibility using the same headset

  • EQ presets: Choose between 3 different audio presets to make sure you have the best equalizer settings for the game you’re playing

Check the A40 microphone

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound and select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as the input device.
  2. Speak into the boom microphone and watch the Windows input meter.
  3. Confirm the boom is fully seated in the headset.
  4. Check that the inline mute switch is not engaged.
  5. Review Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and allow Windows, the game, and your chat application to access the microphone.

Test the microphone in Windows before testing it in a game. This separates a hardware or Windows problem from an in-game voice-chat setting.

Configure games, Discord, and other chat applications

Windows defaults do not always control each application. Games, Discord, Teams, streaming software, and similar programs may have their own input and output selectors.

A useful routing pattern is:

  • Game output: ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game
  • Game voice-chat input: ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice
  • Discord output: ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice if you want Discord on the Voice channel
  • Discord input: ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice

This is a recommended arrangement, not a requirement. Some players prefer all output through Game and control chat volume inside Windows or the application. If the physical Game/Voice balance control does nothing, check whether both streams are being sent to the same endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need an optical cable?

No. Optical is optional. USB-only is the practical setup for PCs and laptops without an optical output, and Logitech’s current support instructions describe USB-only operation as an alternative.

If your PC has a genuine optical output and you specifically want to use the older optical configuration:

  1. Connect the optical cable from the PC’s optical output to the MixAmp’s optical input.
  2. Keep the USB connection if you need USB microphone and chat functionality.
  3. Select the PC’s digital optical output in Windows when following the optical route.

Older Logitech instructions may mention Dolby Digital Live, disabling DTS, or selecting a 48.0-kHz sample rate. Those options depend on the PC’s audio hardware and drivers; many modern systems do not provide Dolby Digital Live. Do not treat them as universal Windows 11 requirements.

Start with stereo and no extra surround processing. Windows spatial audio, game-native surround, MixAmp Dolby processing, motherboard effects, and optical processing can conflict when enabled together. Add and test one spatial mode at a time only after basic audio and microphone operation are reliable.

ASTRO Command Center and firmware

For supported legacy hardware, Logitech’s current Astro software page lists the Windows version of ASTRO Command Center, distributed through the Microsoft Store, for:

ASTRO Gaming Logitech G A20 Gen 2 Wireless Headset Xbox - White/Green
  • Extended wireless range up to 15m (50ft) through the 2.4 GHz wireless signal.
  • On-device audio balancing between voice chat and game audio on Xbox or PC
  • Console specific USB transmitter for easy cross-platform compatibility.
  • Built-in battery provides more than 15 hours of battery life and can be recharged through the USB-C port.
  • Quick and easy mute functionality with the flip-to-mute microphone.
  • MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3
  • MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4
  • A50 Gen 3
  • A50 Gen 4

The page also lists Mac support for selected legacy Astro devices. Check the official Logitech G Astro software page for the current compatibility list.

Use this safe update process:

  1. Connect the MixAmp directly to the PC by USB.
  2. Open ASTRO Command Center and check whether the MixAmp is detected.
  3. Apply a firmware update only if the official application offers one for your device.
  4. Do not disconnect the MixAmp during the update.
  5. Restart the MixAmp and PC afterward.

If the Microsoft Store version does not detect the unit, test another USB port and data cable before trying anything else. Do not use unofficial firmware packages or random legacy utilities. Logitech’s separate Firmware Update Tool is a legacy utility that the company says is no longer supported or maintained; that is distinct from ASTRO Command Center support for listed MixAmp models.

If you have only the A40 headset

A bare A40 headset does not require a MixAmp. It will not, however, provide the MixAmp’s physical Game/Voice mixer, EQ presets, Dolby processing, or USB audio interface.

PC with one combined headset jack

Connect the A40’s compatible 3.5-mm headset plug directly to the combined headphone-and-microphone jack.

PC with separate headphone and microphone jacks

Use an appropriate PC headset splitter or Y-adapter so the headphone and microphone contacts reach the correct ports. Cable wiring and connector standards can vary between A40 generations and bundled cables, so verify compatibility for your exact headset and cable.

If sound works but the microphone does not, check the splitter wiring, connector type, inline mute state, boom seating, and Windows input selection.

Troubleshooting checklist

No sound at all

  1. Confirm the MixAmp has power.
  2. Confirm its indicator is white rather than red.
  3. Set Windows output to ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game.
  4. Raise the MixAmp volume.
  5. Firmly reconnect both ends of the inline mute cable.
  6. Try another USB port.
  7. Try another known-good data-capable Micro-USB cable.
  8. Test Windows audio with another application.
  9. Test the A40 directly with a compatible device, or test another headset on the MixAmp.

These isolation tests help identify whether the fault is in Windows, the USB cable, the MixAmp, the inline cable, or the headset. Logitech specifically recommends checking PC mode, seating the inline cable, and testing the headset or another headset independently in its troubleshooting guidance.

The microphone does not work

  • Select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as the Windows input.
  • Make sure the inline mute switch is off.
  • Ensure the boom microphone is fully inserted.
  • Allow microphone access in Windows privacy settings.
  • Check that the game or chat app is not using a webcam or motherboard microphone.
  • Verify that the Windows input meter moves before troubleshooting the game.

Game audio works, but chat does not

  • Set the chat application’s input and output explicitly.
  • Use Voice for chat if you want Game/Voice balancing.
  • Turn the balance control away from fully Game.
  • Check the application’s voice-chat volume.
  • Confirm the game is not using an unrelated default device.

Chat works, but game audio does not

  • Set game output to ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game.
  • Check the Windows volume mixer for a muted game.
  • Confirm the MixAmp is in PC mode.
  • If optical is connected, ensure Windows is not sending audio to HDMI or another motherboard output.

ASTRO Command Center cannot detect the MixAmp

  1. Connect the MixAmp directly instead of through a hub.
  2. Try another USB port.
  3. Try another data-capable Micro-USB cable.
  4. Close other audio-management software.
  5. Restart the PC with the MixAmp connected.
  6. Install the Microsoft Store version of ASTRO Command Center for supported MixAmp models.

Do not install random third-party firmware tools. The supported-model list is maintained on Logitech’s official software page.

Audio is distorted, echoing, or doubled

Common causes include multiple surround systems, microphone monitoring or sidetone, the same application routed to both Game and Voice, inconsistent optical and USB routing, or application-level virtual surround.

  1. Disconnect optical and return to USB-only.
  2. Use stereo output first.
  3. Confirm Game and Voice routing.
  4. Temporarily disable Windows spatial audio, game surround, and other effects.
  5. Add one surround or spatial mode at a time.

When to replace a cable, MixAmp, or headset

Replace or test the Micro-USB cable when the MixAmp powers on but is not detected. A standard data-capable cable may solve the problem; a charge-only cable will not provide reliable data communication.

Investigate the inline mute cable when the headset works elsewhere but audio or microphone input fails through the MixAmp. Confirm the connector style and A40 generation before buying a replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suspect the MixAmp when the headset works directly, multiple known-good USB cables and ports fail, and the MixAmp remains undetected or cannot deliver audio.

Consider replacing the headset only after testing the headset independently. A new headset is unnecessary when the real issue is a Windows device assignment or a bad cable.

Newer Astro products may make sense for readers who specifically want wireless operation, multi-platform switching, or a replacement for failed legacy hardware. The current Astro Series product page includes newer models such as the A50 Gen 5, A50 X, A20 X, A30, and A10. Compatibility, availability, and pricing for legacy A40 TR and MixAmp hardware vary by region.

Reliable baseline configuration

For most PC owners, use this baseline before experimenting with surround features:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • USB from the MixAmp directly to the PC
  • Inline mute cable between the A40 and the MixAmp front headset port
  • MixAmp indicator set to white PC mode
  • ASTRO MixAmp Pro Game for game output
  • ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice for chat output and microphone input
  • Stereo audio with extra spatial and surround processing disabled initially

Once game audio, chat, microphone input, and Game/Voice balancing all work, test optional Dolby, Windows spatial audio, or game-native surround processing one at a time.
