What NVIDIA announced at CES 2025
NVIDIA introduced the desktop GeForce RTX 50 Series at its CES 2025 presentation on January 6, describing the products as Blackwell-based GPUs. The company highlighted fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, GDDR7 memory, neural rendering, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, and Reflex 2.
For the RTX 5070 specifically, NVIDIA announced:
- A starting price of $549.
- 12GB of GDDR7 memory.
- 672GB/sec of memory bandwidth.
- February availability guidance, which was later superseded by the March launch update.
- A claim that the card could average twice the performance of the GeForce RTX 4070 in NVIDIA’s cited games at 2560×1440 with full ray tracing and DLSS Multi Frame Generation enabled.
The performance comparison is a manufacturer launch claim, not an independent benchmark result. Its outcome depends on the games selected, graphics settings, resolution, CPU, DLSS mode, frame-generation settings, and latency behavior. It should not be interpreted as a universal two-times performance improvement in every game.
Launch timing and availability
The RTX 5070’s launch dates are easiest to understand as three separate milestones:
- January 6, 2025: NVIDIA announced the RTX 50 Series at CES and said the RTX 5070 would be available starting in February.
- March 5, 2025: NVIDIA announced that stock-clocked and factory-overclocked cards from add-in-board partners were available. The company listed ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY, and ZOTAC among the manufacturers.
- Later in March 2025: NVIDIA said the limited Founders Edition design would become available.
NVIDIA’s marketplace reference listing showed a $549 price during the research period but was marked out of stock. Retail inventory and partner-card prices change frequently, so the announced $549 amount should be treated as the starting price for the reference product rather than a promise that every RTX 5070 will sell for that amount.
Blackwell architecture and RTX 5070 features
DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation
The RTX 5070 supports NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 feature set, including Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation. Multi Frame Generation can generate up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame in supported implementations, according to NVIDIA.
That technology can substantially increase the displayed frame rate in compatible games, but the generated frames do not replace the underlying traditionally rendered frames. The practical result depends on the base frame rate, CPU limitations, game support, visual settings, and the latency characteristics of the selected mode. NVIDIA’s CES presentation also claimed that the complete DLSS 4 stack could multiply frame rates by up to eight times in its stated comparison; this is a vendor claim under specified conditions, not a guaranteed RTX 5070 result.
Ray tracing and Tensor processing
The card uses fourth-generation ray-tracing cores and fifth-generation Tensor Cores. NVIDIA lists 94 TFLOPS of ray-tracing performance and 988 AI TOPS for the reference configuration. These figures describe specialized hardware capabilities; they are not directly interchangeable with traditional rasterization benchmarks or a promise of a specific frame rate.

NVIDIA also lists Reflex 2 and NVIDIA Broadcast support. Reflex technologies target gaming responsiveness, while Broadcast provides software features for supported microphones, cameras, and streaming setups. The usefulness of these features depends on game, application, and device support.
Expected gaming role: 1440p first, 4K with support from DLSS
NVIDIA positions the desktop RTX 5070 for high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming. The company reported that selected games could run above 120 frames per second at 1440p with full ray tracing, and claimed up to a two-times performance improvement over the RTX 4070 when DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation was used.
Those figures should be read as NVIDIA-reported launch claims. They do not establish a universal frame-rate target for every game. A sensible way to assess the card is:
- 1440p rasterized gaming: The RTX 5070 is positioned as a high-refresh 1440p card, although results vary by game and settings.
- 1440p ray tracing: Blackwell’s ray-tracing hardware and DLSS features are intended to make demanding ray-traced settings more practical in supported games.
- 4K gaming: The card can be used for 4K gaming, but demanding titles may require DLSS, tuned settings, or frame generation to reach a high refresh rate.
- Competitive gaming: The card has the rendering capability for high frame rates, but the final result can be limited by the CPU, game engine, monitor, and chosen image-quality settings.
The 12GB memory capacity is sufficient for the card’s intended performance class, but buyers planning long-term use with heavily modded games, very high-resolution texture packs, professional workloads, or unusually demanding 4K settings should consider memory requirements on a title-by-title basis rather than assuming that more GPU cores alone determine suitability.

Power supply requirements and connectors
NVIDIA specifies 250W total graphics power and a 650W recommended system power level for the reference RTX 5070 configuration. NVIDIA says that recommendation is based on a system using a Ryzen 9 9950X, so it is not a universal wattage rule for every build.
The reference specification supports either:
- Two PCIe 8-pin power cables used with the included adapter; or
- A PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 300W or more.
NVIDIA recommends a PCIe CEM 5.1-compliant power supply. Partner cards may use different connector arrangements or publish higher requirements. ASUS, for example, lists 650W with a Ryzen 5/Core Ultra 5-class processor, 750W with a Ryzen 7/Core Ultra 7 or Core i7-class processor, and 850W with Ryzen 9/Core Ultra 9, HEDT, or Threadripper-class processors for its published RTX 5070 recommendation table.
For a new build, a 650W power supply for RTX 5070 may meet the reference requirement, but the better choice is the wattage and connector configuration specified for the exact graphics card and the rest of the system. A higher-quality ATX 3.1 or PCIe Gen 5-compatible unit can simplify cabling and provide more appropriate transient-response support, but capacity alone does not establish power-supply quality.
Power-supply checklist
- Check the exact partner card’s recommended wattage.
- Confirm whether it uses a native PCIe Gen 5 cable or an adapter.
- Use separate PCIe 8-pin cables where the manufacturer requires them; do not rely on an unsuitable daisy-chain arrangement.
- Make sure the case and motherboard layout will not sharply bend or compress the power cable near the connector.
- Account for the CPU, drives, fans, USB devices, and overclocking when sizing the complete system.
Card dimensions, cooling, and case fit
NVIDIA lists the reference card at 242mm long, 112mm wide, and two slots thick. Those dimensions apply to the reference design, not automatically to every RTX 5070 sold by a board partner. Some models use larger heatsinks, three or more slots, reinforced backplates, or different power connectors.
Before ordering, compare the exact card’s:
- Maximum GPU length, including any front-mounted power connector or adapter.
- Slot thickness and the number of adjacent expansion slots it blocks.
- Required case clearance around the power connector.
- Recommended airflow and radiator placement.
- Power-supply connector and wattage requirements.
An SFF-oriented model does not mean that every small-form-factor case is compatible. ZOTAC’s RTX 5070 Solid, for example, is advertised as SFF-ready, but the case still needs to support that particular card’s length, width, thickness, power cable, and airflow requirements. Treat “SFF-ready” as a reason to examine the model specification—not as a substitute for checking case clearance.
A PC case GPU clearance listing is useful only when its measurements are compared with the specific RTX 5070 model. Reference dimensions should not be used to approve a larger factory-overclocked card.
Display support and high-refresh monitors
The reference RTX 5070 has three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI output. NVIDIA lists DisplayPort 2.1b with UHBR20 and HDMI 2.1b support. Its stated maximum configurations reach up to 4K at 480Hz or 8K at 165Hz with DSC.
These are interface capabilities, not a guarantee that games will render at those frame rates or that every monitor setup will support them. The practical limit depends on the monitor, cable, DSC support, color depth, chroma settings, operating-system configuration, and the number of active displays.
Recommended Free Tools
A DisplayPort 2.1b or HDMI 2.1b cable is therefore a compatibility consideration for a high-refresh display, not a mandatory RTX 5070 purchase. Check the monitor manufacturer’s required cable standard and the target resolution and refresh rate before replacing a working cable.
Streaming, recording, and creator workloads
For creators, NVIDIA highlights the ninth-generation NVENC encoder, AV1 encode and decode support, NVIDIA Studio drivers, NVIDIA Broadcast, and acceleration in video-editing applications. The current reference table lists one ninth-generation NVENC encoder and one sixth-generation NVDEC decoder.
That makes the RTX 5070 relevant to gaming capture, live streaming, and video production in applications that support NVIDIA’s hardware encoders and GPU acceleration. The card’s benefit depends on the application’s codec support, project resolution, effects, timeline complexity, and whether the workload is limited by GPU compute, CPU performance, storage, or memory.

Local GPU-based streaming and cloud streaming solve different problems. A service such as StreamNeo is positioned as a cloud service for looping prerecorded video to YouTube Live, with cloud execution and automatic recovery without requiring a local PC, OBS, or local encoder. It is therefore a cloud streaming alternative, not a direct reason to buy an RTX 5070. A local RTX 5070 makes more sense when you need interactive gameplay capture, local production, or GPU-assisted creative work.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the product type. Make sure the listing is for the desktop RTX 5070 rather than the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU or RTX 5070 Ti.
- Compare the complete model number. Check the board partner’s clock speeds, dimensions, slot thickness, cooler, connectors, and warranty.
- Verify power compatibility. Match the PSU to the exact card and the CPU class in the system.
- Measure the case. Check GPU length, height, thickness, airflow, and power-cable clearance.
- Set a realistic display target. The card is primarily aimed at high-refresh 1440p; 4K results depend heavily on the game and DLSS settings.
- Check feature support. Confirm that the games and creative applications you use support DLSS 4 features, AV1 encoding, or other functions you specifically want.
- Recheck price and stock. The $549 figure is the announced starting price, while partner pricing and availability are volatile.
Bottom line
The desktop GeForce RTX 5070 is a Blackwell GPU with 6,144 CUDA cores, 12GB of GDDR7, modern ray-tracing and Tensor hardware, and support for DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s target is high-refresh 1440p gaming, with 4K gaming possible when settings and supported technologies are chosen carefully.
The most important buying caution is that “RTX 5070” describes a GPU class, not one identical physical card. The reference model is 242mm long, two slots, and specified for a 650W system, but partner cards can be larger and require more power. Choose the exact model only after checking case clearance, PSU cabling, CPU class, display requirements, and the current price.
