Yes, NvTrueHDR can enable NVIDIA’s RTX HDR processing in some SDR games without relying on the NVIDIA App overlay. It is an unofficial utility by modder emoose that configures undocumented NVIDIA driver-profile settings on a per-game basis. It is not an NVIDIA product, does not add native HDR to a game, and is not guaranteed to work with every title or rendering setup.

For the simplest supported route, try NVIDIA App first. NvTrueHDR is mainly useful when the App-based RTX HDR controls are unavailable, undesirable, or dependent on an overlay you do not want to use.

Quick verdict: should you use NvTrueHDR?

  • Use it if you have a supported GeForce RTX GPU, Windows 11, an HDR display, and an SDR game that lacks usable native HDR.
  • Prefer NVIDIA App RTX HDR if you want NVIDIA’s officially documented and easier configuration path.
  • Use native HDR when a game has a good HDR implementation. Do not convert a game that is already outputting HDR.
  • Use Windows Auto HDR if you want the simplest Microsoft-supported conversion option.
  • Be cautious with competitive online games or titles protected by strict anti-cheat. NvTrueHDR is less invasive than some DLL or shader mods, but that does not prove anti-cheat compatibility.

NvTrueHDR is best treated as an enthusiast workaround: useful, reversible, and potentially effective, but not a universal fix.

What NvTrueHDR actually does

NvTrueHDR is a small standalone configuration tool designed to activate NVIDIA’s driver-level RTX HDR processing for games that render in SDR. The developer’s original announcement described it as modifying undocumented NVIDIA driver and profile settings rather than injecting a conventional graphics mod into every game. The tool is distributed through its Nexus Mods page.

RTX HDR analyzes an SDR game image and tone-maps it for an HDR display. It does not rewrite the game’s lighting engine, upgrade its textures, create native HDR metadata, or make menus and videos HDR-aware. The result depends on the game’s SDR output, driver version, display calibration, rendering API, selected quality mode, and display hardware.

Some games may gain brighter highlights and a wider apparent luminance range. Others may show dim midtones, crushed blacks, clipped highlights, excessive saturation, or overly bright user interfaces. RTX HDR is a conversion layer, not a replacement for carefully implemented native HDR.

Requirements and compatibility

NVIDIA’s documented RTX HDR requirements are a useful baseline for NvTrueHDR, although they do not guarantee that the unofficial utility will work with every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Baseline checklist

  • Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer—NVIDIA specifies build 22621 or later for its official RTX HDR path.
  • GeForce RTX 20-series GPU or newer.
  • A single-GPU configuration. NVIDIA documents no SLI support for RTX HDR.
  • An HDR-capable display rated HDR400 or better. HDR400 is a technical baseline, not a guarantee of good image quality.
  • NVIDIA driver 565.90 or newer for the documented official RTX HDR implementation. Check NVIDIA’s current requirements before troubleshooting a newer setup.
  • Windows HDR enabled at Settings → System → Display → HDR.
  • The game’s own HDR mode disabled.
  • Windows Auto HDR disabled globally or for the target game.

NVIDIA documents RTX HDR support for DirectX 9 through DirectX 12 and Vulkan, but excludes OpenGL from its official support list. Community pages may report broader NvTrueHDR compatibility; those reports should be treated as experimental rather than equivalent to NVIDIA’s documented support.

Compatibility can also depend on the presentation mode, swap chain, launcher, anti-cheat system, overlays, frame-generation layer, upscaler, capture software, ReShade, and other software that intercepts the rendering path.

Calibrate the display first

Run Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration app before judging the result. Calibration helps establish black levels, peak brightness, and the appearance of SDR content in HDR mode.

NVIDIA says its App can use peak-brightness values produced by the calibration utility. If the display’s EDID does not report peak brightness, NVIDIA’s documented App behavior may use a 1,500-nit ceiling, with a documented maximum of 2,000 nits. These values do not turn a weak HDR panel into a high-quality HDR display.

OLED, QD-OLED, and well-designed Mini-LED displays generally provide a more convincing HDR experience than basic edge-lit HDR400 monitors. Contrast, local dimming, black levels, peak brightness, and calibration often matter more than enabling a particular conversion utility.

Download NvTrueHDR safely

Avoid repackaged executables from file-hosting sites and unofficial mirrors. The currently available release number, prompt wording, and command-line syntax should be taken from the release you download; they are not stable facts to copy from an old guide.

Extract the archive into a dedicated folder such as C:ToolsNvTrueHDR. Do not put it in a protected Windows directory, and do not overwrite game files unless the release documentation explicitly tells you to.

How to configure a game

  1. Create a restore point or record the affected NVIDIA profile settings. This gives you a recovery path if a driver update or profile change causes problems.
  2. Enable Windows HDR for the display you will use.
  3. Turn off Windows Auto HDR for the target game.
  4. Disable the game’s native HDR mode. NvTrueHDR is intended for SDR output.
  5. Identify the actual game executable. Select the game process rather than a launcher when the tool asks for a file. If uncertain, check the game’s installation folder or use Task Manager while the game is running.
  6. Run NvTrueHDR.exe from the extracted folder.
  7. Follow the prompts shown by your downloaded build. Select the game executable and the quality or mode offered by that version.
  8. Launch the game and compare the output with NvTrueHDR disabled.
  9. Configure games individually. Do not assume that a profile applied to one executable covers every launcher, edition, or sequel.

Do not rely on an unverified command such as NvTrueHDR.exe game.exe high. The available command-line options and prompt labels may change between releases, so use the release’s README or help output.

Choosing a quality mode

Versions of NvTrueHDR have offered quality choices and optional indicator or debug behavior. Associated NVIDIA Profile Inspector documentation describes profile values corresponding to low, medium, and very-high-quality modes, but those are undocumented driver settings and are not recommended as a manual setup method unless you specifically understand Profile Inspector.

  • Start with the default or highest-quality option presented by the tool.
  • If performance or stability suffers, try a lower mode.
  • Use an indicator or HUD option only while testing.
  • Disable the indicator after confirming operation.
  • Do not assume “very high” will look best on every game or display.

How to confirm that RTX HDR is active

Use several checks rather than relying on one visual clue:

  • Windows HDR should remain enabled for the display.
  • The game should be running on the intended HDR monitor.
  • The game’s native HDR and Windows Auto HDR should be off.
  • The same scene should look different when NvTrueHDR is enabled and disabled, preferably after restarting the game.
  • An optional NvTrueHDR indicator can provide a useful diagnostic signal if the current build and game support it.

Expect higher highlight brightness and a different luminance and saturation balance, but do not treat a brighter image as automatic proof of accuracy. A game can be processing HDR incorrectly and still look more vivid.

Standard screenshots are unreliable evidence. Many screenshot workflows capture an SDR or tone-mapped representation rather than what the HDR display is actually showing. The original developer also noted difficulty capturing RTX HDR accurately. Compare the live output on the display instead.

NvTrueHDR versus NVIDIA App RTX HDR

Feature NvTrueHDR NVIDIA App RTX HDR
Publisher Unofficial community tool by emoose Official NVIDIA feature
Setup Manual, per-game configuration Per-game controls inside NVIDIA App
Path Designed to activate driver/profile behavior without depending on the App’s overlay route Uses NVIDIA App graphics controls and overlay-related functionality
Support Community-maintained and game-dependent NVIDIA-supported with published requirements
Tuning Depends on the tool version and available profile options NVIDIA documents controls such as peak brightness, middle gray, contrast, and saturation
Risk Unofficial executable and undocumented driver settings Official NVIDIA software path
Best for Enthusiasts who cannot or do not want to use the App-based route Most users who want the simplest supported configuration

Both approaches are related to NVIDIA’s RTX HDR processing, but they are not the same user-facing tool. NVIDIA App should generally be the first choice when it detects and supports the game.

Fullscreen, borderless, and multiple monitors

NVIDIA identifies exclusive fullscreen as the compatibility target for RTX HDR. Borderless windowed mode may work when Windows Optimizations for windowed games is enabled, but it is a less useful starting point when troubleshooting.

Extended multi-monitor setups are supported by NVIDIA’s documented path, but mixed HDR and SDR displays can cause confusion. Launch the game on the active HDR monitor. NVIDIA documents limitations involving Surround and Clone Mode, and the official troubleshooting guidance says to disable Fast Sync if RTX HDR does not activate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first test, use one HDR display, exclusive fullscreen, Fast Sync off, and no unnecessary overlays or graphics injectors. Add complexity back only after the basic configuration works.

Image-quality problems and trade-offs

Because RTX HDR converts an SDR image after the game renders it, common problems include:

  • Over-bright white text or menus.
  • Crushed shadow detail.
  • Dim or gray midtones.
  • Clipped highlights.
  • Excessive saturation.
  • Incorrect paper-white brightness.
  • Videos, menus, and gameplay appearing to use different brightness levels.

The developer reported that RTX HDR appeared somewhat darker than Windows Auto HDR on one tested system, while noting limited testing. That is an individual observation, not a universal benchmark. Performance impact is also game-, driver-, and quality-mode dependent; there is no reliable guarantee of zero overhead.

Compare three states where possible: the game’s normal SDR output, RTX HDR, and Windows Auto HDR. If the game has mature native HDR, compare that separately and prefer it when it is correctly implemented.

Troubleshooting

The game crashes on startup

  1. Remove or disable the NvTrueHDR profile for that game.
  2. Retry in exclusive fullscreen.
  3. Temporarily disable NVIDIA, Steam, Discord, and capture overlays.
  4. Temporarily disable frame generation, ReShade, injectors, and graphics wrappers.
  5. Return to the game’s normal SDR output.
  6. If the problem began after a driver update, test a compatible newer or previous driver.
  7. Restore the NVIDIA profile from your backup or reset the affected profile.

Do not delete arbitrary NVIDIA driver DLLs or game files as a recovery method.

There is no visible HDR effect

  • Confirm Windows HDR is enabled.
  • Confirm the game is running on the HDR monitor.
  • Confirm native HDR and Auto HDR are disabled.
  • Check that the selected executable is the actual game executable, not only its launcher.
  • Try exclusive fullscreen.
  • Enable Windows windowed-game optimizations if you must use borderless mode.
  • Disable Fast Sync.
  • Check whether the game uses OpenGL, which NVIDIA’s documented RTX HDR path excludes.
  • Remove Surround or Clone Mode from the test configuration.
  • Check the NVIDIA driver requirement and retest after restarting the game.

The image is washed out, too dark, or oversaturated

  • Run Windows HDR Calibration again.
  • Check the display’s own HDR and tone-mapping settings.
  • Try another NvTrueHDR quality mode.
  • Disable additional HDR shaders or ReShade effects.
  • Confirm native HDR is not active at the same time.
  • Compare against SDR and Auto HDR rather than judging one screenshot.

The indicator does not appear

The indicator is a diagnostic aid, not definitive proof. Community reports indicate that some games may fail to display it even when processing appears to work. Use live image comparisons and the configuration checks above instead of treating the missing indicator as conclusive.

Safety, anti-cheat, and driver updates

NvTrueHDR’s profile-based approach may be less invasive than a DLL injector or game-specific shader mod, but that does not establish anti-cheat safety. Check the publisher’s rules before using it in an online game, and do not assume that a tool is permitted simply because it does not visibly modify game files.

Undocumented driver-profile flags can change after NVIDIA driver updates. A configuration may stop working, change appearance, or need to be applied again after a clean driver installation. Keep a record of what you changed and know how to remove the affected profile.

If a game has good native HDR, use that instead. Running native HDR, RTX HDR, and Auto HDR together can result in double processing or incorrect brightness.

Alternatives to NvTrueHDR

Native in-game HDR

This is the preferred option when it is well implemented. Native HDR allows the game to output HDR-aware scene values rather than converting an SDR frame after rendering.

NVIDIA App RTX HDR

NVIDIA App is the official alternative, with per-game enablement and documented adjustment controls. It is the best starting point for users who want an officially supported workflow.

Windows Auto HDR

Windows Auto HDR is Microsoft’s simpler SDR-to-HDR option for supported games. It usually requires less manual configuration, though it offers less NVIDIA-specific control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RenoDX and title-specific HDR mods

Game-specific projects such as RenoDX can provide more tailored results because they target a particular title’s rendering behavior. They require per-game support and may be more invasive than a driver-profile configurator.

ReShade HDR tools and RHI

ReShade-based solutions offer extensive shader control but can add performance cost, compatibility issues, and anti-cheat concerns. RHI is a third-party convenience tool that advertises library detection, HDR auto-toggle, and per-game RTX HDR controls. It is not an official NVIDIA utility and is a poor fit for readers who want the smallest possible software footprint.

Final recommendation

NvTrueHDR is a legitimate community utility for enthusiasts who want NVIDIA RTX HDR in an SDR game without depending on the NVIDIA App overlay path. Use it on a properly calibrated HDR display, configure one game at a time, start with conservative compatibility settings, and keep a clear recovery path.

It should not be described as native HDR, an official NVIDIA product, or a universal solution. If NVIDIA App RTX HDR works for your game, it is the safer default. If the game has good native HDR, use that instead. NvTrueHDR earns its place when those options are unavailable or unsuitable and you are willing to test the result yourself.
