Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeveral known crashes in The Casting of Frank Stone were fixed in patches, but that does not mean every PC crash is solved. Start by updating the game, Windows, and your graphics driver, then verify the installation and disable conflicting software. If the crash happens at one chapter or save point, treat it as a possible game or user-data problem rather than assuming your hardware is at fault.
The patch history below confirms fixes through September 26, 2024. It does not prove that every later PC configuration or crash scenario is resolved.
Once game launch troubleshooting is complete, Outbyte PC Repair can clean temporary files and review crash logs for recurring failures.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First, identify where the crash happens
The location and symptoms usually determine the right fix:
- Immediately after pressing Play or before the main menu: check updates, drivers, overlays, Oculus software, firewall or proxy interference, and configuration files.
- After the intro, during the prologue, or at a repeatable interaction: update the game, verify files, lower graphics settings, and try an earlier save.
- When loading one save: back up the
Savedfolder, then test an earlier save or clean configuration. - Unreal Engine, “Device Removed,” or DX12 errors: investigate driver stability, overclocks, temperatures, and GPU load.
- Black screen, driver reset, reboot, or shutdown: this is a system-stability problem as well as a possible game problem. Stop repeatedly launching the game until hardware and power stability are checked.

Fastest fixes to try first
1. Update the game through your storefront
For Steam:
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click The Casting of Frank Stone and choose Properties.
- Open Updates and make sure automatic updates are enabled.
- Open Steam’s Downloads page and install any pending update.
Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store players should use the update and repair options in their own launcher. Do not assume that Steam instructions or files apply to another edition.
2. Restart Windows and update system components
Restart the computer, then update Windows, DirectX components where applicable, and your Nvidia, AMD, or Intel graphics and audio drivers. A motherboard BIOS update can be relevant to broader CPU or system-stability problems, but it is not a confirmed Frank Stone-specific fix.
3. Verify the installation
On Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties → Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Relaunch after verification finishes.

Verification can replace missing or corrupted installation files. It generally cannot repair a damaged save or user configuration.
4. Remove software conflicts
Behaviour’s launch troubleshooting recommends checking firewall or proxy interference and uninstalling Oculus software if the game will not start. As a controlled test, also disable overlays and monitoring tools:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- Nvidia App or GeForce overlay
- AMD overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner
- RGB, capture, and virtual-reality software
Disable one group at a time, test the game, and re-enable software individually once stability returns. These overlay steps are general PC troubleshooting, not confirmed fixes for every Frank Stone crash.
5. Reduce graphics load
If you can reach the menu, set the preset to Medium or Low, disable frame generation temporarily, reduce expensive lighting or ray-tracing options if available, try borderless or windowed mode, and cap the frame rate. Change one setting group at a time so you can identify what matters.
Recommended Free Tools
Players have reported getting past repeatable crashes after lowering settings or changing FSR settings, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal fix. Do not treat a launch option such as -dx11 or -dx12 as guaranteed; community testing has not shown a reliable solution for everyone.
Fix crashes at launch or before the main menu
Use this order:
- Install any available game update.
- Restart Windows.
- Update the graphics driver and Windows.
- Verify the game files.
- Remove Oculus software and temporarily disable overlays or monitoring tools.
- Test a clean configuration using the backup procedure below.
- Reinstall only if the earlier steps fail.
Behaviour includes reinstalling in its official launch and installation troubleshooting, but reinstalling may not help if the problem is in a save, configuration file, or unresolved game bug.

Fix a crash at one chapter, cutscene, or save point
A crash that occurs at exactly the same chapter or interaction may be a game-specific bug or damaged user data. Try the following:
- Confirm that the game is fully patched.
- Verify the installation.
- Restart the PC.
- Lower graphics settings before loading the affected save.
- Disable frame generation and overlays.
- Try an earlier save or restart the chapter.
- Back up the save folder before changing or removing files.
The historical patch notes are especially relevant here because confirmed crashes affected the prologue, the Punch save point, the camera reliquary interaction, and The Phantom of Cedar Steel. If the same failure remains repeatable after these steps, report the exact chapter, action, save, and error to Behaviour support.
Reset the configuration safely
PCGamingWiki lists the configuration and save data beneath:
%LOCALAPPDATA%TheCastingofFrankStoneSavedConfigWindows
The broader save-data directory is:
%LOCALAPPDATA%TheCastingofFrankStoneSaved
To test whether corrupted user data is causing the crash:
- Exit the game and Steam or your other launcher.
- Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R.
- Enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%TheCastingofFrankStoneSavedand press Enter. - Copy the entire
Savedfolder to the desktop or another separate backup location. - Rename the original folder to
Saved-backuprather than deleting it. - Launch the game and test it with a clean configuration.
- If it works, restore only necessary saves or settings carefully.
This is a diagnostic procedure, not an official Behaviour repair. Renaming or deleting folders can remove settings and may affect local progress if you do not keep a backup.
A community report described replacing the full-game Saved folder with one from the demo. That is an unofficial, version-sensitive last resort and could overwrite progress or create compatibility problems. Do not try it without a complete backup.

What “Device Removed” and other DX12 errors mean
An Unreal Engine or Direct3D 12 error such as DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG generally means that the graphics device or driver stopped responding. It does not by itself prove that the GPU is physically defective.
Possible causes include driver instability, overheating, an overclock or undervolt, high VRAM pressure, shader compilation, or a defect in the game or engine. Test these changes:
- Return GPU and CPU overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
- Check temperatures and remove dust or airflow problems.
- Perform a clean graphics-driver installation if a normal update does not help.
- Lower resolution and graphics settings.
- Disable frame generation temporarily.
- Close overlays, monitoring tools, and capture software.
If the screen goes black, the driver repeatedly resets, or Windows reboots, stop treating it as an ordinary desktop crash. Check Windows Event Viewer, thermals, power delivery, BIOS stability, and the rest of the system. Do not repeatedly stress-test a computer that is shutting down or showing graphical artifacts.
Steam Deck and Linux
Behaviour states that Steam Deck is not currently supported for The Casting of Frank Stone. Proton workarounds may work for one player or Proton version and fail after an update, so they should not be presented as supported Windows fixes.
When to contact Behaviour support
Submit a support ticket if the game still crashes after updating, verifying files, and testing a backed-up clean configuration; if multiple saves fail; if the crash is repeatable at one story location; or if the game causes a driver reset or wider system instability.
Include:
- Storefront and game version, if visible
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU, and RAM
- Graphics-driver version
- The exact chapter, interaction, or menu where it fails
- The complete error message or Unreal Engine report
- DxDiag and available crash logs
- Whether file verification, lower settings, and a clean configuration test helped
The developer specifically requested DxDiag logs, graphics-card settings, and frame-rate information for PC performance reports. Use the official Behaviour support page rather than relying on paid driver-updater tools.
Bottom line
The Casting of Frank Stone is not accurately described as having every PC crash solved. Several documented launch, story, game-mode, and save-loading crashes were patched, but persistent failures can still come from corrupted user data, drivers, third-party software, DX12 instability, hardware problems, or another game-specific bug.
For the best diagnostic path, update and verify first, then remove conflicts and lower graphics settings. If only one save or chapter fails, protect your saves and test an earlier one or a clean configuration. If the entire PC crashes, investigate system stability instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
