1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesnvvitvs.dll is an NVIDIA Video Server component, and a missing nvvitvs.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, or mismatched NVIDIA graphics-driver installation. Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or game displays the error
- Whether it appears at Windows sign-in, when launching an application, or after a driver update
- Whether the failure began after an NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience change, Windows update, antivirus quarantine, rollback, or manual cleanup
- Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Which GPU appears under Device Manager → Display adapters
- Whether the computer still has NVIDIA graphics hardware installed
The safest repair is to reinstall the matching NVIDIA driver package. Do not start by downloading an isolated DLL.

What is nvvitvs.dll?
nvvitvs.dll belongs to NVIDIA driver software and is associated with the NVIDIA Video Server component. NVIDIA’s binary records include nvvitvs.dll, while NVIDIA system reports identify related files such as nvViTvS.dll and nvViTvSR.dll as NVIDIA Video Server components.
It is not established as a Microsoft Windows system DLL. It is also not part of the Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributables, or .NET. The correct location, architecture, and version depend on the NVIDIA package installed for the particular GPU and Windows installation.

That means there is no universal file size, hash, version, or folder that can be used to validate every copy. A file with this name inside an NVIDIA driver directory and signed by NVIDIA is materially different from an unsigned copy in a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory.
What the error may say
Windows may display one of these loader messages:
- “The program can’t start because nvvitvs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nvvitvs.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting nvvitvs.dll.”
- “Error loading nvvitvs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “nvvitvs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. The file may exist while another dependency is missing or incompatible. The “not designed to run on Windows” wording can indicate a damaged, incorrectly replaced, incompatible, or wrongly typed binary.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver
This is the first repair for an error that appeared after a graphics-driver update, failed rollback, partial uninstall, or Windows update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Identify the GPU
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact NVIDIA GPU name.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver date if available.
If the adapter has a warning icon, the driver installation may already be incomplete.
Download the matching package
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver-download page.
- Select the exact product family and GPU model.
- Select the installed Windows edition and architecture.
- Choose the driver type offered for that hardware.
- Download the package directly from NVIDIA.
- Do not select a driver for a similar-looking GPU or a different Windows installation.
For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s graphics driver if NVIDIA’s generic package does not support the laptop’s device-specific configuration. For an older GPU, use NVIDIA’s advanced or archived driver search instead of assuming the newest package supports it.
Perform a clean installation
- Close games, browsers, video tools, and other applications.
- Run the downloaded NVIDIA installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Custom (Advanced) when the installation type appears.
- Select Perform a clean installation, if the option is available.
- Continue with the installation.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
A clean installation replaces the driver components as a set instead of adding a single file to an already inconsistent installation. After restarting, launch the program that previously failed.

A successful repair normally means the original application opens without the nvvitvs.dll message, Device Manager shows the NVIDIA adapter without a warning icon, and the NVIDIA driver control software opens normally. If the error remains, do not copy a replacement DLL into System32 or the application folder. Continue with the checks below.
Recommended Free Tools
Manually finding the correct driver for an older GPU or separating several stale driver packages can take longer than expected. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation requires the full version, and it is not required for this NVIDIA-specific repair.
Fix 2: Check quarantine and verify the file
Security software can quarantine a driver component after an update or false detection. It can also expose a genuinely suspicious copy that was never part of the NVIDIA installation.
Review antivirus history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nvvitvs.dll. - Expand the event and record the file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
If the event shows an official NVIDIA installation path and the security product identifies the file as safe, restoration may be available. Follow that product’s recovery process, then reinstall the complete NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA rather than relying on the restored file alone.
If the file was found in a temporary directory, a download folder, a user-profile directory, or an unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL.
Check the file’s publisher and location
If a copy remains on the computer:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
- Check the General tab for the full path.
A valid NVIDIA signature in an NVIDIA driver directory supports the file’s identity, but it does not prove that the surrounding driver installation is healthy. An unsigned copy in an unexpected directory deserves security investigation.
Fix 3: Repair the NVIDIA software and remove stale startup entries
A partial uninstall can leave a startup task or application reference that still tries to load the missing component.

First, check whether NVIDIA software is still intended to be installed:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for NVIDIA.
- Leave the driver and control components installed if the computer still uses an NVIDIA GPU.
- If the NVIDIA hardware has been removed, uninstall software that is no longer wanted.
If the error appears only at login:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an NVIDIA entry associated with software that was removed.
- Right-click only an entry you have positively identified as obsolete.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect Task Scheduler for stale NVIDIA tasks, but do not delete active driver tasks merely because their names are unfamiliar. If the GPU is still installed, reinstall the driver before removing startup entries.

It may explicitly reference an NVIDIA component or have its own damaged files.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and copying a file from a different driver generation can introduce incompatible dependencies. Do not guess which architecture nvvitvs.dll should have. The matching NVIDIA installer supplies the required files for the supported system.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
To check an application’s architecture, consult its documentation or ask its publisher. Windows does not always expose a simple architecture label in the application’s Properties window.
The practical fix is still to install the NVIDIA package intended for the GPU and Windows installation, then repair or reinstall the affected application if it is 32-bit and continues to fail. Do not mix files from different driver packages or place a 32-bit copy in System32 or a 64-bit copy in SysWOW64.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are relevant when Windows servicing or system components are damaged. They are not the primary source for an NVIDIA driver DLL, so run them after addressing the NVIDIA installation.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the NVIDIA driver installation if the original error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC may repair protected Windows files, but it should not be expected to restore every NVIDIA driver component.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair actions require the full version, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct NVIDIA driver.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, restart and run the commands again only if the Windows error points to continuing component corruption. If the NVIDIA error persists while Windows reports no repair issue, return to the driver package rather than treating SFC as a DLL download service.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 nvvitvs.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. There is no authoritative NVIDIA evidence that nvvitvs.dll is a self-registering component.
If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that does not mean the NVIDIA driver needs another copy of the file. It means the command does not apply to that DLL. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.
Why downloading nvvitvs.dll separately is unsafe
Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched driver-generation build
- A modified or malicious file
- A file with missing dependencies
- An unsigned copy that triggers another security warning
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application directory can also create DLL search-order problems and leave the NVIDIA installer’s component state inconsistent.

Work through these final checks:
- Confirm that the GPU listed in Device Manager matches the driver selected during installation.
- Check Windows Update history for a driver change immediately before the failure.
- Review antivirus quarantine again.
- Check whether multiple unrelated files are disappearing.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender or installed-security-product scan.
- Check disk health if files are repeatedly corrupted or removed.
- Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a known system change.
- If no NVIDIA GPU remains, remove obsolete NVIDIA software and startup entries instead of installing a new driver.
- If the application names a different missing DLL, repair that application separately.
If the problem returns after every driver update, suspect a persistent security-software conflict, incompatible OEM configuration, disk damage, or a mismatch between the GPU and driver generation.
FAQ
Is nvvitvs.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a Microsoft Windows system DLL. It is associated with NVIDIA Video Server software supplied through NVIDIA graphics-driver packages.
Is nvvitvs.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Check the file’s path and digital signature. An NVIDIA-signed file in an NVIDIA driver directory is different from an unsigned copy in an unrelated folder.
Should I download nvvitvs.dll from the internet?
No. Reinstall the matching official NVIDIA driver instead. An isolated file may be the wrong architecture, may not match its dependencies, and may be unsafe.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of nvvitvs.dll may be missing, incompatible, or damaged. Reinstall the complete NVIDIA package rather than copying only the named file.
Do I need to enable a Windows Feature?
Usually not. nvvitvs.dll is a graphics-driver component, not a Windows optional feature. Open Settings → Apps → Optional features only when a separate Windows error specifically identifies an optional component.
What if I have an NVIDIA laptop?
Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s graphics driver when NVIDIA’s generic installer does not support the device-specific configuration. The correct package must match the laptop model, GPU, and Windows installation.
