Seeds determine the opening matchups and, in the first two rounds, usually determine home venue; regular-season points and an ordered set of tiebreakers determine those seeds.
How does the NWSL playoff format work?
The 2026 NWSL season has 16 teams, each playing 30 regular-season games: 15 at home and 15 away. The top eight advance to the playoffs. There are no opening-round byes: all eight begin in the quarterfinals, and a loss ends a team’s run.
The league’s 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations state: “At the conclusion of the Regular Season the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs, with all playoff teams playing in the opening round.”

Quarterfinals pair the highest seed with the lowest qualifier, then match the remaining teams inward:

The bracket paths are fixed, so a team’s seed shapes both its first opponent and which side of the bracket it enters.
How are NWSL playoff seeds determined?
Regular-season standings award three points for a win, one for a tie and zero for a loss. Teams are ranked by points. If teams are level, the league applies these criteria in order; once a criterion separates the tied teams, later criteria are unnecessary for ordering them:

- Goal differential.
- Most total wins.
- Most goals scored.
- Head-to-head points accumulated.
- Most goals scored head-to-head.
- Fewest accumulated disciplinary points.
- A coin flip if two teams remain tied, or drawing of lots if three or more remain tied.
For the disciplinary tiebreaker, the 2026 rules assign one point for a yellow card, three for an indirect red resulting from two yellows, four for a direct red, and five for a yellow card plus a direct red. Only one of those totals applies to a player in a single game. At this step, fewer team disciplinary points rank higher.
Does the higher seed host?
The higher seed hosts in the quarterfinals and semifinals unless venue availability prevents it; the lower seed may host in that circumstance. The cited 2026 rules do not establish that the higher seed hosts the championship, so the first two rounds’ hosting provision should not be extended to the final.

What happens if an NWSL playoff game is tied?
If the score is level after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time in their entirety. If they are still tied after extra time, a penalty shoot-out decides the match.

These are announced dates for the 2026 season, not permanent format rules; check the league’s 2026 schedule announcement for the current schedule. The league announced that the 2026 playoff and championship presentation would be under the Google Pixel name.
