NYT Connections puzzle #508 was published on October 31, 2024. Below are progressive hints if you want a nudge first, followed by the complete solution. The Halloween words in the grid are a distraction, not a category.

Hints for Connections #508

Try these in order and stop when you have enough to solve a group:

  1. One group contains affectionate names for someone.
  2. Another group involves movements you can make with your eyelids.
  3. Look for a set of car names.
  4. The four remaining words can each come before “hunt.”

Connections #508 answers

Spoilers below: the four categories and their words are revealed here.

Category Words
Terms of endearment DARLING, LOVE, PUMPKIN, TREASURE
Things you can do with your eyelids BAT, BLINK, FLUTTER, WINK
Sports cars DIABLO, MUSTANG, SPIDER, VIPER
___ HUNT EGG, JOB, SCAVENGER, WITCH

Why the Halloween words are a red herring

BAT, PUMPKIN, WITCH, and SPIDER all evoke Halloween, fitting the puzzle’s October 31 date. They do not make a group: BAT belongs with eyelid movements, PUMPKIN is a term of endearment, SPIDER is in the sports-car group, and WITCH completes “witch hunt.”

How Connections groups the words

Connections asks players to divide 16 words into four themed groups of four. Some links are straightforward, while others depend on familiar language or less obvious phrase completions. A 2024 paper by Todd, Merino, Earle, and Togelius describes the game as drawing on common linguistic knowledge and sometimes lateral or abstract thinking: “Missed Connections: Lateral Thinking Puzzles for Large Language Models.”

The #508 answer groups are also reported by Fortnite Insider, Parade, and TechRadar.
