How the four groups fit
BUNCH
CLUSTER, COLLECTION, CONSTELLATION, and GROUP can each refer to a gathering or set of things. CONSTELLATION is the overlap trap: besides meaning a group, its opening also points toward the purple category.
ENDING WITH SILENT “T”
BALLET, DEBUT, RAPPORT, and TAROT are commonly pronounced with a final “t” that is not sounded.

SERIAL KILLER MOVIES
MONSTER, PSYCHO, SEVEN, and ZODIAC are film titles grouped by the puzzle under this category.
STARTING WITH CONSTELLATIONS
The first letters of each word contain the name of a constellation: DRACO in DRACONIAN, HYDRA in HYDRANT, LEO in LEONARDO, and LIBRA in LIBRARY. This is a word-start pattern, not a connection among the words’ meanings.

A useful way to read the puzzle’s patterns
This grid combines ordinary meanings with letter-pattern clues. The shared sense of “bunch” may draw attention to CONSTELLATION, but that word also serves as a bridge to the hidden constellation names in the purple set. After identifying one connection, compare the remaining words for narrower patterns such as an unpronounced final letter, film titles, or embedded names.
OmniGame describes yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest; those are that guide’s difficulty characterizations, not measured statistics. The solution is cross-listed by two answer guides, rather than confirmed here by an official NYT archive.
