NYT Connections #650 answers
Yellow: MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
TAMBOURINE, THEREMIN, TIMPANI, TROMBONE
A tambourine is a percussion instrument, while timpani are orchestral kettle drums. The trombone is a brass wind instrument. The theremin is the unusual member of the group: it is an electronic instrument controlled by moving the hands near its controls rather than touching a conventional keyboard, strings, or valves.
Green: KNICKKNACK
TCHOTCHKE, THINGAMAJIG, TRIFLE, TRINKET
These words all point toward something small, minor, decorative, or vaguely identified. Tchotchke means a small ornament or trinket. A thingamajig is an informal placeholder for an object whose name is unknown or forgotten. A trifle can be something of little importance or value, and a trinket is a small ornament or similarly low-value item.
Rank #3
Blue: WORDS WITH THE PREFIX MEANING “THREE”
TRIANGLE, TRIDENT, TRILLION, TRILOBITE
Each word begins with tri-, a prefix associated with three. A triangle has three sides, a trident has three prongs, and a trilobite’s name refers to its three-lobed form. Trillion belongs because it begins with the same prefix, even though the number itself is not literally a group of three.
Purple: WORDS ABBREVIATED WITH “T” + ANOTHER LETTER
TELEVISION (TV), TOUCHDOWN (TD), TRADEMARK (TM), TUBERCULOSIS (TB)
The connection is between each full word and its familiar abbreviation: television becomes TV, touchdown becomes TD, trademark becomes TM, and tuberculosis becomes TB.
Rank #4
Why this Connections puzzle was difficult
The all-T construction made the grid look as though the initial letter might be the main trick. It was only part of the design. The words also created tempting overlaps between possible groups.
The biggest trap was TRIANGLE. Because a triangle can be associated with musical instruments in some contexts, it is easy to consider putting it with the tambourine, theremin, timpani, and trombone. In the intended solution, however, TRIANGLE belongs with TRIDENT, TRILLION, and TRILOBITE because all four begin with tri-.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The green group is difficult for a different reason: its words are not all equally precise. Tchotchke and trinket are straightforward names for small objects, while thingamajig is deliberately vague and trifle describes something unimportant. The common idea is “a small, minor, decorative, or unnamed thing,” rather than one exact dictionary definition.
