Tricky overlaps in this puzzle

Water words point in different directions

SPRING, STILL, and PERRIER may bring water to mind, but they belong to separate groups: SPRING is a watch part, STILL fits “Unmoving,” and PERRIER becomes TERRIER when its first letter changes.

Stationary, not stationery

STATIONARY belongs with words meaning unmoving. The puzzle uses the spelling for being fixed in place, not “stationery,” the term for writing materials.

PAWL is the less familiar watch-part word

PAWL is the least familiar entry in the mechanical-watch group for some solvers; the category places it with GEAR, RATCHET, and SPRING.
