Category Words
LOOP BAND, CIRCLE, HOOP, RING

Why the words fit

LOOP

A band, circle, hoop, or ring can each describe a loop. Some words have other familiar meanings, so the shared shape or form is the useful connection here.

KINDS OF BEDS

BUNK, CANOPY, MURPHY, and SLEIGH each names a type of bed.

THINGS CALLED “OSCAR”

This group is based on separate associations, not synonyms: BALONEY recalls Oscar Mayer, GROUCH refers to Oscar the Grouch, O is the word for the letter in the NATO phonetic alphabet, and a statuette is the Oscar award.

A useful way to approach the grid

When a word seems to fit more than one idea, test the whole set rather than committing to its first plausible meaning. A proposed category should explain all four words consistently; then check whether the remaining words still form coherent groups. Here, BAND and RING can invite alternate interpretations, while CIRCLE and HOOP make the loop connection clearer.

These answers are corroborated by TechRadar’s game #559 guide and Yahoo’s December 21 guide. DocumentaryTube’s guide also explains the O association.
