How Connections works

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four that share a connection. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest and purple is trickiest. The challenge often comes from words that seem to fit more than one possible category. NYT says editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary; see the NYT Connections Help Center for the game’s description.
