The “f” in SILENT HILL f has several intended meanings, but its creators have not disclosed the words. In a post-release interview, writer Ryukishi07 estimated there were about four; director Al Yang put the number at about four or five. Producer Motoi Okamoto said he wanted players to imagine what they might be. So any specific expansion is a theory, not a confirmed answer.
What the creators have confirmed about the “f”
In a spoiler-marked post-release interview with Dengeki Online, Ryukishi07 said, “私たちが“f”として想定した意味は、4つぐらいです。” (“The meanings we had in mind for ‘f’ were about four.”) Director Al Yang estimated “4つか5つぐらいです” (“about four or five”). These are the creators’ approximate recollections of their design intent, not a formal count or a list of confirmed words.

The interview does not name any of those meanings. Okamoto said he hoped players would arrive at interpretations of their own, and that different people might have quite different answers. He did not confirm which guesses, if any, matched the team’s thinking.

Why the letter was left ambiguous
Ryukishi07 said Okamoto first proposed adding “f” to the title. The writer had not initially felt strongly about the letter; Okamoto’s suggestion turned it into a small puzzle, starting with the question, “What is this ‘f’?” That open question was part of the title’s appeal, rather than a clue with one publicly supplied solution. Dengeki Online’s interview is marked as containing major spoilers; its discussion of the title appears near the beginning, but later sections cover plot details.

Okamoto had described the letter as having multiple meanings before the game launched, saying it could be understood as an abbreviation for multiple words while declining to disclose them. The post-release conversation adds an approximate number, but still does not reveal the words. 4Gamer.net’s August 2025 interview records the earlier explanation.
What fan interpretations can—and cannot—claim
The game’s setting gives players material to think with, but not a definitive decoding. KONAMI describes SILENT HILL f as psychological horror set in 1960s Japan: high-school student Shimizu Hinako lives in the remote town of Ebisugaoka, where a fog descends and transforms the familiar town. The official description also points to social expectations and psychological torment. Those themes can make a proposed reading feel apt, but they do not establish that any particular word was intended. KONAMI’s reveal provides the premise.

Ryukishi07 also described Japanese horror, in his own terms, as drawing unease from not knowing whether a situation is safe or dangerous. He put it as “もう1つは，「現在の状況が分からないことによる居心地の悪さ」です。” (“The other is the unease that comes from not understanding the current situation.”) In the post-release interview, he said he brought Japanese mythology and Inari beliefs into a game set in Japan. Such context helps explain why an unresolved title can suit the work; it is not evidence for the unnamed “f” meanings. See the 4Gamer interview and Dengeki Online interview.

- Does it fit the game’s setting or themes? That can make an interpretation plausible, but does not prove intent.
- Is it being presented as fact or inference? Unless supported by a creator’s explicit statement, treat it as speculation.
The clearest answer
The “f” is intentionally open to multiple readings: the creators estimated roughly four or five intended meanings, but have not published a canonical list. Players can interpret the letter through the game’s story and themes, but no single proposed expansion should be presented as the official answer.
