Its four themes are heartbeat-related words, landforms, picture-hanging tools and supplies, and words that follow “foot.” Use the hints below before opening the full answer key.
Hints for Connections #666
Try these category clues in order, from broadest to most revealing:
- Yellow: Words associated with a heartbeat.
- Green: Geographic features.
- Blue: Things you might use to hang a picture.
- Purple: Each word completes a familiar term beginning with “foot.”
The puzzle’s phrase-based purple connection reflects a common challenge in Connections: some categories depend on recognizing a larger phrase rather than matching words by their immediate meanings. A paper on lateral-thinking puzzles describes this general feature of the game; it does not assess this puzzle’s difficulty specifically (arXiv paper).
All 16 words
The board contains POUND, LOCKER, LEVEL, CRATER, NAIL, HILLS, CAPE, HANGER, PULSE, HAMMER, BEAT, GORGE, BALL, RIDGE, PRINT and THUMP.

Connections #666 answers
Spoilers below: the four groups and their category labels are revealed here.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | THROB | BEAT, POUND, PULSE, THUMP |
| Green | LANDFORMS | CAPE, CRATER, GORGE, RIDGE |
| Blue | PICTURE HANGING NEEDS | HAMMER, HANGER, LEVEL, NAIL |
| Purple | FOOT_____ | BALL, HILLS, LOCKER, PRINT |
Why the purple group works
Add “foot” before each word to make FOOTBALL, FOOTHILLS, FOOTLOCKER and FOOTPRINT. This connection is less about the words sharing a direct definition and more about completing familiar compound words, which is why it can be easy to miss while sorting by literal meanings.

This is the Monday, April 7, 2025 puzzle, game #666. TechRadar and Forbes both identify it by that date and number; Forbes lists the complete groupings. TechRadar’s extracted board text renders CAPE with visually similar Cyrillic characters, but the intended word is CAPE, as confirmed by the landforms answer. TechRadar’s writer Johnny Dee commented, “I should have known when I saw that this was puzzle number 666 that I was in for hellish time.” That is Dee’s reaction, not an official difficulty rating. Neither cited answer guide provides an attributable solve-rate statistic for this puzzle (TechRadar; Forbes).
