Why each group works
PLACES TO SHOP
BAZAAR, FAIR, MARKET, OUTLET are all places or retail settings where you can buy goods. “Fair” is the least specific of the four, since it can also mean reasonable or just, which makes it a useful distraction.
KINDS OF PIZZA
HAWAIIAN, PLAIN, SUPREME, VEGGIE are all standard pizza descriptions. Hawaiian identifies a topping combination, while plain, supreme and veggie commonly appear as menu labels.

ENDING WITH COLORS
This is the wordplay group. The relevant matches are at the ends: everGREEN, infraRED, marigOLD (spelled GOLD in the final letters of MARIGOLD), and quickSILVER. In full, the hidden color words are GREEN, RED, GOLD and SILVER.
____ CLEANER
Add CLEANER after each word: BATHROOM CLEANER, DRY CLEANER, PIPE CLEANER and VACUUM CLEANER. The shared second word is the key to this final set.

A practical solving path
- Start with the concrete shopping terms. BAZAAR, FAIR, MARKET and OUTLET form a clean set of four.
- Collect the obvious food labels. HAWAIIAN, PLAIN, SUPREME and VEGGIE all describe pizza.
- Inspect word endings. Once the remaining words include EVERGREEN, INFRARED, MARIGOLD and QUICKSILVER, isolate their color endings.
- Complete the compound phrases. The four leftover words all precede CLEANER.
The game requires four exact words in every category. If a candidate seems to fit two groups, test whether the other three words support the same relationship before submitting it.
Common traps in this grid
VACUUM
VACUUM may look like a household or shopping-related word at first. It belongs with BATHROOM, DRY and PIPE because all four can precede CLEANER.

The color group is easy to miss if you search only for words that begin with a color. Read the final letters of EVERGREEN, INFRARED, MARIGOLD and QUICKSILVER.

NYT Connections presents 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Categories can rely on literal meanings, shared phrases or wordplay, and the groups have different difficulty levels. Because the game permits up to four mistakes, reserve a submission for a set that has been checked against all 16 entries.
