How Connections works

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. Each group shares a category, which may depend on a direct association, a word pattern, or a less obvious meaning. This guide covers the May 28, 2024 puzzle #352—not a May 28 puzzle from another year.

Spoiler warning: The complete categories and word groupings follow.

Category Words How the connection works
AMENABLE EASY, FLEXIBLE, OPEN, RECEPTIVE Each can describe someone or something willing to be guided, changed, or persuaded.
ANAGRAMS EVIL, LIVE, VEIL, VILE Each word uses the same four letters in a different order.
SPELLING BEE RANKS AMAZING, BEGINNER, GENIUS, SOLID These are rank names associated with the Spelling Bee puzzle.
ADJECTIVES FOR A CANDLE LIT, SCENTED, WAXY, WICKED Each can describe a candle; WICKED points to its wick, rather than its more familiar meaning of evil.

Tips for solving this grid

  • Look for words with multiple plausible meanings. WICKED can suggest evil, but the candle category uses the word’s connection to a wick.
  • Check whether a set is based on how words are formed, not just what they mean. EVIL, LIVE, VEIL, and VILE are rearrangements of the same letters.
  • When two words seem linked, hold the connection lightly until you can find two more that fit the same rule. GENIUS and SOLID are joined by the Spelling Bee rank labels, not by a shared everyday description.
