There is no objective answer to “What was the best game of the year?” Into Indie Games framed its 2025 selections as staff favorites, noting that “best” means different things to different players. Here is a focused shortlist of four standout 2025 indie games supported by the available release, platform, and creator information—not a fabricated top 10. Only Blue Prince is specifically documented here as the result of solo development, so the other games are not labeled solo-made.
How to read this shortlist
The selection balances genre variety, documented 2025 release status, platform access, and a clear reason each game merits attention. A game’s inclusion is an editorial judgment, not a claim that it outranks every other indie release. Likewise, an award nomination or a game’s independent status does not establish that it was made by one person.

The available credits support four well-documented examples, not ten verified solo-developed games. The entries below identify the credited developer or teams and distinguish the one explicit solo-development claim from the rest.

Four standout indie games of 2025
Blue Prince — best for evolving, knowledge-driven puzzles
Into Indie Games describes Blue Prince as following eight years of solo development and credits Dogubomb. It released on April 10, 2025. Its central appeal is an evolving mansion where progress depends on learning how its rooms and puzzles work, rather than simply collecting upgrades or following a fixed route.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your own cult in a land of false prophets
- Venture out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland Followers
- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
The source lists PlayStation 5, GeForce Now, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as platforms, and categorizes the game as puzzle, indie, adventure, and strategy. This is the clearest fit for someone specifically seeking a game with documented solo development in this shortlist.
Hollow Knight: Silksong — best for demanding exploration and combat
Into Indie Games’ staff review highlights exploration, combat, traversal, and demanding encounters. Team Cherry is credited as developer, and the game is listed as releasing on September 4, 2025. It is a metroidvania and action-adventure game for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows.
Rank #2
That developer credit is not evidence of solo authorship. Its place here is for players looking for skill-intensive movement and combat in a world built around exploration.
Absolum — best for side-scrolling action with roguelite progression
Into Indie Games describes Absolum as combining side-scrolling action with roguelite progression. The credited developers are DotEmu, Guard Crush, and Supamonks. It is listed as an October 9, 2025 release for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows.
Rank #3
- In collaboration with Panic and House House, iam8bit is proud to release Untitled Goose Game "in a box," packed with exclusive collectible goodies:
- Physical Edition of the Game
- The Spring/Summer Plaza Catalog, a 24-page mail-order style circular
- 11" x 17" Village Map Poster
- Premium “No Goose" Sticker
Its appeal is the mix of immediate fighting-game-style action and a progression structure that gives repeated runs a role. The multiple developer credits mean it should not be presented as a solo-developed title on the evidence available here.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — the 2025 award winner
Into Indie Games lists Sandfall Interactive as the developer and April 24, 2025 as the release date. Platforms listed are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, GeForce Now, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Rank #4
- Play 2 beloved and critically acclaimed masterpieces
- Experience the complete journey of Ori
- Master new skills and face larger-than-life bosses
- Get bonus physical items: set of art cards and digital soundtracks
The Game Awards’ 2025 Best Independent Game page names Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the winner. That is a useful recognition signal, not proof of solo authorship or a universal verdict on the year’s best game.
What awards and staff picks can—and cannot—tell you
The Game Awards’ 2025 Best Independent Game page lists Absolum, Ball x Pit, Blue Prince, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hades II, and Hollow Knight: Silksong as nominees, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 marked the winner. The site also has a separate Best Debut Indie Game category. These distinctions help explain how one prominent awards body recognized independent games, but they do not settle which game is best for an individual player or whether it was made by a solo developer.

YAGA’s 2025 awards page separates Best Solo Developer and Best Game by Solo Dev from small-team and large-team categories. That distinction matters: a game can be excellent and independent without being solo-made, while “solo-developed” describes who made it rather than how good it is.
