Hints for Connections #330

  • One group consists of words meaning to bring things together.
  • Another group names things that are irritating or troublesome.
  • Look for four words that express an amount.
  • The last group becomes clear when you place “the” before each word.

Connections #330 answers for May 6, 2024

The 16 words were SOME, LOVERS, FOOL, MANY, COUPLE, JOIN, MAGICIAN, HANDFUL, TOWER, FEW, BOTHER, TIE, PAIN, LINK, SEVERAL, and PEST. The categories and word groupings are reported by Fortnite Insider and independently corroborated by Forbes.

Category Words Link
CONNECT COUPLE, JOIN, LINK, TIE Each can mean to connect or bring together.
NUISANCE BOTHER, HANDFUL, PAIN, PEST Each can describe an annoyance or troublesome thing.
QUANTITY WORDS FEW, MANY, SEVERAL, SOME Each indicates an amount or number.
TAROT CARDS, WITH “THE” FOOL, LOVERS, MAGICIAN, TOWER Each completes a tarot card name when preceded by “The.”

Why HANDFUL is the misleading word

HANDFUL can suggest an amount, which makes it tempting to place with FEW, MANY, SEVERAL, and SOME. In this puzzle, however, it belongs with BOTHER, PAIN, and PEST in NUISANCE. The quantity-word group is FEW, MANY, SEVERAL, and SOME.

How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center describes the game this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” Each puzzle has one intended solution, though words can plausibly fit more than one category. NYT’s color scale runs from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest. See the NYT Connections Help Center for game and access details.
