Spoilers ahead. The October 2, 2024 Connections puzzle is identified as #479 in the dated TechRadar and Parade answer pages—not #478. Puzzle #478 was published the previous day, October 1. Here are progressive hints first, followed by the full answers.

October 2 Connections hints

Connections asks you to sort sixteen words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Some links rely on wordplay, and plausible red herrings can make a group seem to fit when it does not. If you want a nudge without seeing the solutions, reveal these clues in order:

  1. One group is about putting something at risk.
  2. One group contains actions you can perform with a kitchen knife.
  3. One group connects to a well-known actor’s filmography.
  4. The final group has a distinctive number of arms—or, in one case, none.

October 2 Connections answers

The sixteen words are JOKER, DICE, CHANCE, CASINO, OCTOPUS, SLOT MACHINE, CUBE, GAMBLE, SLICE, BET, SHIVA, JULIENNE, HEAT, VENUS DE MILO, RISK, and TAXI DRIVER. The categories and solutions are:

Yellow: Put on the line

  • BET
  • CHANCE
  • GAMBLE
  • RISK

Green: Use a kitchen knife

  • CUBE
  • DICE
  • JULIENNE
  • SLICE

Blue: Robert De Niro films

  • CASINO
  • HEAT
  • JOKER
  • TAXI DRIVER

Purple: Distinctive number of arms (or lack thereof)

  • OCTOPUS
  • SHIVA
  • SLOT MACHINE
  • VENUS DE MILO

The blue category is also labeled “Robert De Niro movies” in Parade’s answer page; the wording differs, but the four answers are the same. The purple group brings together an octopus, Shiva, a slot machine, and the armless Venus de Milo.

Why the puzzle number is easy to misread

The supplied title calls October 2 puzzle #478, but the dated October 2 answer pages from TechRadar and Parade identify it as #479. TechRadar’s October 1 page identifies the previous puzzle as #478. This article therefore uses the October 2 date and #479 for the answers above.
