  • Yellow — trust as real: ACCEPT, BELIEVE, BUY, SWALLOW
  • Green — power issues: OUTAGE, SHORT, SPIKE, SURGE
  • Blue — summary: ABSTRACT, BRIEF, DIGEST, OUTLINE
  • Purple — name homophones: CURT, HAIRY, KNEEL, WANE

Why the groupings can be tricky

DIGEST can suggest more than one idea: it belongs in the summary group here, even though its other meanings may tempt a different placement. The purple set depends on hearing names in the words: CURT/Kurt, HAIRY/Harry, KNEEL/Neil, and WANE/Wayne. Those sound-alikes make the theme easier to spot once you look for names rather than literal meanings.

How Connections works and where to play

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center describes the puzzle as having one solution; words that could plausibly fit multiple categories are part of what makes it challenging. Groups are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, through purple, the trickiest. NYT says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. Read the NYT Connections Help Center for the game details.

NYT lists Connections in its Games app, at nytimes.com/games/connections, on nytimes.com/theathletic, and in the News app. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone, according to the Help Center.
