Saturday, May 4, 2024, is NYT Connections puzzle #328. Use the progressive hints below if you are still solving; the four groups and full answer key are clearly marked farther down.

How Connections works

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four, with each group linked by a shared theme. The connection may depend on meaning, how a word functions in conversation, a concrete object, or a less obvious kind of wordplay.

Hints for May 4, 2024

Try these in order, stopping when you have enough to finish the board:

  1. Look for four words that describe enjoying something.
  2. Some words can pad or soften ordinary conversation.
  3. Think about the pieces inside a lock.
  4. Say the remaining words aloud and listen for measurement terms.

The board contains: SPRING, LOVE, PIN, WELL, FANCY, JEWEL, LIKE, CARROT, CYLINDER, HURTS, LITERALLY, RELISH, UM, OM, SAVOR, and TUMBLER.

Why the wordplay works

The last group is based on sound rather than spelling or meaning: CARROT sounds like carat, HURTS like hertz, JEWEL like joule, and OM like ohm. Those spoken-aloud matches point to units of measure.

LIKE can plausibly fit either “enjoy” or a conversational filler, which makes it a useful decoy. In this puzzle, it belongs with FILLER WORDS.
