Why the groupings work

The puzzle switches up the kind of connection in each color: yellow uses words associated with persistence, green relies on animal metaphors, blue groups biographical labels, and purple depends on sound-alikes. Spotting which kind of relationship a set is asking for can help when a word seems to fit more than one possibility.
