Start with the progressive hints below if you want a nudge; the category names and complete answers follow.
Progressive hints for Connections #772
- Yellow: Think of talking back or insolence.
- Green: Find verbs meaning to make something less severe or intense.
- Blue: Look for repeating visual arrangements or designs.
- Purple: Each word can come before “PIE.”
Category names and answers
Full spoilers below. The four groups are sassiness, mitigation, patterns, and words that precede “pie.”
- Yellow — SASSINESS: ATTITUDE, CHEEK, LIP, MOUTH.
- Green — MITIGATE: CUSHION, DAMPEN, SOFTEN, TEMPER.
- Blue — PATTERNS: CAMO, CHECKERS, HONEYCOMB, STRIPES.
- Purple — ___PIE: CHESS, CUTIE, HUMBLE, WHOOPIE.
Why the groupings can be tricky
CHESS and CHECKERS may suggest a board-game connection, but they belong to different groups: CHESS completes “chess pie,” while CHECKERS is a visual pattern alongside CAMO, HONEYCOMB, and STRIPES. The purple set also relies on less familiar compounds, including chess pie and whoopie pie.
