These hints and answers are for Wednesday, July 30, 2025: NYT Connections puzzle #780. The hints come first; the complete groups are below the spoiler warning.

What are some clues for today’s NYT Connections groups?

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. Each group shares a theme, and the clues below offer a way to narrow them down without immediately giving away every answer.

  • Yellow: Show them the way.
  • Green: You’ve got a platform.
  • Blue: Begin with an ancient language.
  • Purple: Jumbled orchestra.

These progressive clues and the answer key are from TechRadar’s guide to game #780.

What are the answers for today’s Connections groups?

Spoilers below: the four groups and all 16 answers are revealed here.

Color Category Words
Yellow Instruct COACH, DIRECT, GUIDE, TRAIN
Green Means INSTRUMENT, MEDIUM, ORGAN, VEHICLE
Blue Starting with Greek numerical prefixes DIOXIDE, MONORAIL, TETRACYCLINE, TRIANGLE
Purple Anagrams of musical instruments ABUT, BULGE, GROAN, VOILA

Why the blue group fits

The first elements of the words point to Greek numerical prefixes: mono- in MONORAIL, di- in DIOXIDE, tri- in TRIANGLE, and tetra- in TETRACYCLINE.

Why the purple group fits

Rearrange each word’s letters to find a musical instrument: ABUT becomes TUBA, BULGE becomes BUGLE, GROAN becomes ORGAN, and VOILA becomes VIOLA.

A note about a conflicting answer list

Parade’s July 30 answer guide confirms the date, game number, category names, and most answers, but prints QUADRANT in the Greek-prefix group instead of TETRACYCLINE. TechRadar’s listed board includes TETRACYCLINE and does not include QUADRANT, so the table above follows the board words that make up this puzzle’s 16 entries.
