How Connections works

The board has 16 words, and the goal is to make four groups of four that share a connection. The New York Times says each puzzle has exactly one solution, while words may appear to fit more than one theme; those misleading overlaps are part of the challenge. See the NYT Connections help page for the rules.

Why the date can differ by timezone

The New York Times releases each daily puzzle at midnight in the player’s timezone. That means the local date is the clearest label for a puzzle: TechRadar’s guide to the August 2 game was published August 1 in its UTC listing. Pairing the date with game number #783 helps identify the intended puzzle.

Where to play or find the archive

The NYT help page lists the NYT Games app, nytimes.com/games/connections, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app as places to play. It says the full archive goes back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play can affect some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. Check the current NYT help page for access terms.
