Why the horse-racing group has five tokens
The blue group represents four Triple Crown-winning horses, not five. GALLANT FOX is one horse name split across two entries, GALLANT and FOX; the other names are CITATION, OMAHA, and SECRETARIAT.
How Connections works
According to the New York Times Help Center, Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded from Yellow, the easiest, through Green and Blue to Purple, the trickiest. Each puzzle has one solution, though words may seem to fit multiple categories. Sports Edition uses the same format.
