It’s the five-letter 1-Across entry in the June 2, 2025, NYT Mini Crossword, for “Film by the Coen brothers set almost entirely in Minnesota (not North Dakota).”
Why the answer is FARGO
Fargo is the Coen brothers’ 1996 film. The title refers to Fargo, North Dakota, but the story is centered largely in Minnesota: the American Film Institute’s catalog synopsis begins with Jerry Lundegaard in Minneapolis and identifies Fargo as the criminals’ base. That contrast explains the clue’s “not North Dakota” parenthetical without suggesting the entire film takes place in Minnesota.
