NYT Strands game #220, for Wednesday, October 9, 2024, has the theme “Full house.” Its spangram is HOMEROOM. Hints appear first below; the complete answer list is behind a spoiler warning.
Hints for Strands #220
Use these in order if you want help without seeing every answer straight away:
- Theme: “Full house.”
- Spangram clue: “Where the heart is.”
- Spangram placement: It touches the board’s left and right edges at row five, according to TechRadar’s guide.
- Words that can unlock in-game hints: BIFF, FRAME, ITCH, PANT, ROLL and DUST. Finding three unrelated words unlocks a hint that highlights a theme word, according to Try Hard Guides’ description of the game’s mechanics.
How the theme works
The seven theme answers are names for rooms or spaces found in a house. HOMEROOM adds a second sense of “room”: it can mean a school classroom or the group of students assigned to one. That connects the “Full house” clue to both household spaces and the wordplay in the spangram. This is an interpretation of the puzzle, not an official explanation from The New York Times.
How Strands hints work
Try Hard Guides describes Strands as a themed, word-search-style game. In its account, letters can be connected in any direction without reusing or crossing them; the spangram touches the board’s left and right sides; and finding three unrelated words earns a hint that highlights a theme answer. These are mechanics as described by that guide, rather than a direct quotation from NYT rules.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the answers may feel like a “full house”
The theme groups familiar household spaces with rooms that not everyone has at home. In his TechRadar answer article, Global Editor in Chief Marc McLaren joked that his home contained neither an OFFICE, LIBRARY, PANTRY nor FOYER, and that the puzzle’s answers seemed to assume a larger house. That is McLaren’s personal reaction, not a statement from the puzzle’s publisher.
