Why some players saw a different July 7 puzzle
The July 7 puzzle kept game number #491, but the NYT replaced the initially published board during the day. Its original theme was “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh”; the final board used “Prescriptions plus.” Contemporary reports and player accounts indicate that some people saw or solved the first version before the replacement, which explains why archived answers and recollections can differ.
In TechRadar’s revised July 7 report, the publication quoted the NYT explanation that “Strands themes and boards are created and scheduled weeks in advance.” It also reported the NYT’s apology and explanation that the original theme and board may have felt insensitive given tragic events then unfolding in Texas. The final answer list and the replacement are documented in secondary puzzle coverage and archives; a directly accessible NYT archive was not available in the cited results.
