This guide is for the historical NYT Strands puzzle from Tuesday, August 19, 2025: game #534. The theme clue is “Dash it!” Spoilers are separated below so you can stop after a hint.
Theme clue: “Dash it!”
The puzzle’s clue is “Dash it!” If you want a gentler nudge before seeing any letters, Forbes offered the additional hint “Bring ’em together.” Both point toward joining parts of certain expressions.
Opening-letter clues
Forbes listed these opening-letter pairs, ordered left to right and then top to bottom by the first appearance of each word’s letters: WI, HO, HY, HO, PE. They are clues to the board words, not their full answers.
In-game hint words
TechRadar listed DATE, PEEP, HOTEL, PLATE, LILY, and SLIP as words to find for unlocking Strands’ in-game hints. These are hint-generating guesses, not the puzzle’s theme answers. TechRadar describes Strands as playable on desktop or mobile through NYT Games; Try Hard Guides describes a hint as revealing a theme word after three qualifying non-theme words.

Spoilers below: the spangram and all four theme answers.
NYT Strands #534 answers
Spangram
HYPHENATED is the 10-letter spangram. TechRadar says it touches the left and right sides of the board at row five.
Theme words
- HOCUSPOCUS
- HOITYTOITY
- PELLMELL
- WILLYNILLY
The board entries are shown without punctuation. Written as conventional compounds, they are hocus-pocus, hoity-toity, pell-mell, and willy-nilly. Their hyphens explain the connection to “Dash it!”; that is an explanation of the answer set, not a separate statement from the New York Times.

Each theme answer is a familiar expression made from paired elements commonly joined by a hyphen. The spangram names the shared feature, while the answers supply examples. The clue words above serve different purposes: the opening-letter pairs point toward answers, while DATE, PEEP, HOTEL, PLATE, LILY, and SLIP are reported as guesses for earning in-game hints.
