NYT Strands Joined the Games App in 2024—Here’s How to Play It Now

NYT Strands joined the Games app in June 2024 and remains available on iPhone, Android and the web. Here’s how access, subscriptions and progress syncing work.

Strands joined The New York Times Games app on June 27, 2024. It is not a new 2026 launch, but it remains available through the official Games app for iPhone and Android, as well as in a web browser. The app is free to download, while full access to Strands and the wider Games lineup depends on a qualifying New York Times subscription; non-subscribers may have limited access.

What is NYT Strands?

Strands is The New York Times’ daily themed word-search game. You find words hidden in a letter grid, with the puzzle built around a daily theme and a central “spangram”—a word or phrase describing the theme and spanning the board.

It is part of the same broader puzzle lineup as Wordle, Connections, the Crossword, Spelling Bee, Sudoku, Pips and Crossplay, but its grid-based word search gives it a different feel from those games.

When did Strands enter the Games app?

The integration was reported on June 27, 2024, when Strands became part of the regular NYT Games experience rather than remaining a separate browser destination. The main benefit was convenience: players could move between Strands and other NYT games without switching to a different site or app.

As of August 18, 2026, Strands remains listed as part of the Games lineup. The original announcement is covered by The Verge.

How to play Strands now

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Install the official NYT Games: Wordle & Crossword app from Apple’s App Store.
  2. Open the app and select the Me tab.
  3. Choose Create a free account or Log In.
  4. Open the Games area and select the Strands card.

On Android

  1. Install the official NYT Games app from Google Play.
  2. Open the app and select the menu icon.
  3. Tap Log in and use the account associated with your NYT access.
  4. Open the Games tab and select Strands.

NYT’s setup guidance is available in its Games app help documentation. The app’s exact operating-system requirements can change, so check the current store listing if your device cannot install it.

In a web browser

You do not need the mobile app to play. Strands is also available through the NYT Games website, making the browser route useful on a desktop, laptop or device that cannot run the current app.

Is the NYT Games app free?

The app itself is free to download, but downloading it does not guarantee unrestricted access to every game or feature. NYT says non-subscribers and subscribers whose plans do not include Games may receive limited access.

Full Games access, including Strands, is associated with qualifying plans such as:

There is no separate Strands subscription indicated in the available NYT Games information. Strands is included alongside the other games in the Games product. Because prices, trials, renewal terms and regional offers can change, check the live subscription page rather than relying on an old quoted price.

Access rules can also vary by account, promotion, market and future NYT policy. The safest summary is that the app is free to install, while full access to the Games catalog requires an eligible subscription; occasional or limited access may be available without one.

Will Strands progress and streaks sync?

Log in before playing if you care about your history. NYT says an account allows saved puzzle progress, statistics and streaks to be accessed across devices and browsers.

If you play while logged out, progress may be stored locally on that device. Replacing your phone, reinstalling the app or changing browsers can then put that progress at risk.

Games app versus browser

Option Best for Trade-off
Games app Daily mobile players and people who use several NYT games Requires installation and a supported device
Web browser Desktop play or users who do not want another app Less integrated with a mobile app experience
NYT News app General NYT journalism It is not the primary destination for Games content

The Games app and the general NYT News app are separate products. NYT’s Android News app guidance distinguishes News from Games, so installing the News app alone may not put Strands in your navigation.

What to do if Strands is missing

  1. Confirm that you installed the official NYT Games: Wordle & Crossword app, not only the NYT News app.
  2. Update the Games app through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  3. Check whether your device’s operating system is supported by the current store listing.
  4. Open the app’s Games area or Games tab rather than looking through the News app.
  5. Log out and back in with the account connected to your NYT subscription.
  6. If the app is unavailable in your store or your device cannot run a supported version, use NYT Games in a browser instead.

There is no verified universal fix or current minimum iOS or Android version established by the supplied NYT guidance, so avoid treating a specific historical app version as a guaranteed requirement.

Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google

If you subscribed through Apple or Google, sign in using the relevant account or continuation option so the app can identify your access. Billing questions for subscriptions purchased through an app store generally need to be handled through Apple or Google rather than directly through NYT.

The bottom line

Strands did join the NYT Games app—but on June 27, 2024, not as a new August 2026 announcement. Today, you can play it in the official iOS or Android Games app or through a browser. Install the app if you want a single hub for NYT puzzles, and log in if you want your progress, statistics and streaks to follow you across devices.
