What are pudding keycaps?
A pudding keycap usually has an opaque or darkened top, translucent sidewalls, and legends that allow light to pass through. When installed on a backlit mechanical keyboard, light escapes through the letters and symbols as well as through the lower sides of the caps. That creates brighter-looking halos between neighboring keys and more visible under-key illumination.

The name describes the keycap’s visual construction. “Pudding” does not mean that the keycaps use PBT, follow a particular profile, fit every keyboard, or support a specific RGB standard.
Manufacturers use different constructions, but many pudding sets combine a colored upper layer with a translucent lower layer. The legends are often made using double-shot molding or another durable shine-through process. For example, SteelSeries describes its PrismCaps as having translucent sides and legends to enhance RGB illumination.

Pudding versus ordinary shine-through keycaps
“Shine-through” and “pudding” are related terms, but they are not interchangeable.

A keycap can be shine-through without being pudding-style. The defining pudding feature is generally the translucent side or lower section, while shine-through refers specifically to light passing through the legends.
What changes when you install them?
RGB looks more prominent
Pudding caps do not increase the electrical output of your keyboard’s LEDs. They expose more of the light that the keyboard already produces, so the perceived brightness and spread can increase. HyperX markets its dual-layer translucent design as a way to let more light through, while SteelSeries presents translucent sides and legends as an RGB feature.

Legend brightness can still vary substantially because of the font, legend position, plastic thickness, tint, and LED location.

Expect a smaller improvement when the keyboard has weak LEDs, non-RGB backlighting, thick or heavily tinted caps, switches that block light, or LEDs positioned away from the legends. South-facing or otherwise unusual LED arrangements may also illuminate legends less effectively if the keycaps were designed for a different orientation. Product photographs can exaggerate the effect through exposure, color grading, and a very dark room.
Typing feel and sound may change
Changing keycaps can alter the feel and sound, but the result depends on the complete keyboard. ABS is often smoother; PBT is commonly more textured. A thicker or heavier cap may produce a deeper or less sharp sound, while a different profile can change the perceived height and finger movement.
Those effects are not guaranteed. The switches still determine most of the actuation force and travel: pudding keycaps will not turn a linear switch into a tactile one, make gaming faster, or automatically improve accuracy. The case, plate, mounting system, desk surface, stabilizers, and original keycaps also influence sound.
ABS versus PBT pudding keycaps

Pudding is not a synonym for PBT. HyperX’s original pudding set is identified as ABS, while Pudding Keycaps 2 is described as double-shot PBT. Choose PBT when texture, longevity, and resistance to shine matter most. Choose ABS when you prefer a smoother surface, lower cost, or potentially stronger light transmission. PBT quality is not automatically superior, and ABS quality is not automatically poor.

What does double-shot mean?
Double-shot molding forms the keycap and its legend from separate plastic layers. Because the legend is part of the cap rather than simply printed on top, it is generally more resistant to fading and wear.
“Double-shot” does not tell you whether a set is ABS or PBT, whether its sides are translucent, whether it fits your keyboard, or whether its legends align with your LEDs. Use the more precise description double-shot PBT pudding keycaps only when all three characteristics are confirmed.
Compatibility: check this before buying
Compatibility is more important than color or material. A set that looks correct can still fail because of a nonstandard stem, layout, bottom row, spacebar, or stabilizer arrangement.

Most mainstream mechanical keycaps use an MX-style cross stem. They may not fit low-profile switches, optical switches with unusual stems, proprietary systems, membrane keyboards, rubber-dome boards, or laptop-style keyboards. Hot-swappable and soldered switches do not determine keycap compatibility; the stem and keycap dimensions do.

2. Match the keyboard layout
Check whether your board is ANSI or ISO and whether it is full-size, 96%, TKL, 75%, 65%, 60%, or another compact layout. Confirm the Enter key shape, right Shift length, spacebar length, modifier widths, stabilizer positions, and any Fn, Menu, Windows, or Command keys.
Do not assume a “full set” covers every branded keyboard. Corsair and Razer models can use nonstandard bottom-row dimensions, and Logitech compatibility depends heavily on the exact model and switch system. Photograph the bottom row, measure unusual keys if necessary, and compare it with the seller’s layout chart. Keep a return option available when the listing only says “compatible with most mechanical keyboards.”
HyperX says Pudding Keycaps 2 fits HyperX keyboards and most mechanical keyboards with a standard bottom row, including support for 65% and 75% form factors. “Most” is not “all.” SteelSeries says PrismCaps include alternate bottom-row caps intended to support a broad range of brands, including SteelSeries, Razer, HyperX, Corsair, and Ducky.

The HyperX Pudding Keycaps 2 US listing showed a $29.99 MSRP, with one variant displaying $24.99 on sale, based on the supplied August 16, 2026 price check. The Corsair mod kit showed $44.99 at that check. Treat both as observed prices, not permanent prices.
If you want durable PBT and backlit legends without translucent pudding sides, Corsair’s full 104/105-key PBT double-shot set is a material alternative, not a pudding set. Its supplied price signal was $49.99.
How to compare before-and-after images
A useful comparison keeps the keyboard, RGB setting, camera, and surrounding light consistent. Product shots taken with different exposure settings cannot prove that one set is universally brighter.
- Photograph the original caps in normal room lighting with fixed RGB color and brightness.
- Photograph the replacement caps from the same position and angle.
- Repeat both shots in a dim or dark room to show halos and under-key light.
- Take a close-up of one or two identical keys to compare legend clarity, sidewall tint, and texture.
- Include a bottom-row photograph so readers can see the fit around the spacebar and modifiers.
Look for changes in light between keys, edge glow, and legend brightness—not just overall camera brightness. Unless the images come from controlled testing, label them illustrative. Avoid claims such as “twice as bright” or “improves performance.”
How to install pudding keycaps safely
- Turn off or unplug the keyboard.
- Photograph the original layout before removing anything.
- Use a keycap puller, centered over the cap, and pull straight upward.
- Remove stabilized keys carefully; do not pull stabilizer wires sideways.
- Match every replacement cap to the correct row and position.
- Press each cap straight down onto the switch stem.
- Check that long keys return smoothly without binding or sitting crooked.
- Test every key and save the original caps in a labeled bag.
HyperX lists a keycap puller with Pudding Keycaps 2. If a cap does not fit, stop pressing and verify its size and layout. A stuck or crooked key should be removed and checked for a miscentered stem or obstructed stabilizer. If a legend is dim, check cap orientation, LED position, and whether the set was designed for that lighting arrangement. If a long key rattles, inspect the stabilizer inserts and confirm that the replacement cap has the correct mounting points.
Are pudding keycaps worth it?
They are a sensible upgrade for an RGB-focused gamer or mechanical-keyboard owner who wants more visible lighting without replacing the keyboard. They are also a relatively easy cosmetic change when the board uses a common MX-style stem and standard layout.
Skip them if your keyboard has no backlighting, you dislike visible RGB halos, your board uses proprietary or low-profile keycaps, or your main goal is a specific acoustic result. Pudding caps can alter sound and feel, but lighting is their reliable purpose; deeper sound, quieter typing, and better gaming performance are not guaranteed.
