Oblivion and Skyrim were described by Bethesda director Todd Howard as roughly similar in scale, while Oblivion’s outdoor world was described as a bit larger than Morrowind’s. The often-quoted estimate for Oblivion is approximately 16 square miles, but it is not a standardized measurement of accessible land. There is no consistent official set of exact playable-area figures for all three games.
What Bethesda said about the three maps
The clearest comparison comes from developer interviews, rather than a set of matching map measurements:
- Oblivion: A 2005 GameSpot interview framed its gameworld at approximately 16 square miles. Asked about the comparison with Morrowind, Todd Howard said Oblivion’s outdoor world was “a bit larger than Morrowind’s.” GameSpot’s 2005 interview with Todd Howard.
- Skyrim: In a 2011 interview, Howard said Skyrim was “about the size of Oblivion.” Game Developer’s 2011 interview with Todd Howard.
Read together, these statements support a broad description: Oblivion and Skyrim are similar in stated scale, and Oblivion’s outdoor area is somewhat larger than Morrowind’s. They do not establish a precise, apples-to-apples ranking of traversable square miles.
Why similar area does not mean similar travel
Surface area, route length, and the sense of distance are different things. Howard noted that Skyrim’s mountains can block a direct route, while players could generally cut across Oblivion. That terrain changes how far a journey feels and how a player gets from one place to another, even when the games are described as similar in scale.

Fast travel also affects perception. In the GameSpot interview, Howard observed that Oblivion’s outdoor world was larger than Morrowind’s “but it doesn’t feel that way with the fast travel.” A map can therefore seem more compact when the game makes long-distance movement easy.
Why exact square-mile rankings are uncertain
The approximately 16-square-mile figure is an estimate presented in the 2005 interview, not a documented measurement protocol for accessible terrain. The developer comparisons do not define boundaries or explain whether inaccessible areas are included. Without a common method applied to each game, a precise three-way comparison would suggest more certainty than the evidence supports.
Community calculations may count different worldspace cells or use different boundaries. Those figures can be useful only when their assumptions are explicit; they should not be treated as authoritative totals or used to override the developer’s qualitative comparisons.
Morrowind’s map and what it does—and does not—tell us
Bethesda’s retrospective on making Morrowind describes how Senior Marketing Art Director Michael Wagner assembled the printed map: he loaded the Construction Set section by section and drew the world on paper. That account explains the map’s creation, but gives no comparable area statistic.

Map size is only one measure of a gameworld
Area alone does not capture how much a world offers to explore. A 2019 discussion of the Elder Scrolls games describes a shift from Daggerfall’s larger surface area toward more frequent narrative content and system interactions in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. That is a qualitative point about design and player experience, not a new measurement of any map. Press Start’s “Environment at Play”.
For a practical comparison, keep four questions separate: what area a source estimates, what parts of the map are actually playable, how terrain shapes routes, and how densely the world rewards exploration. The available developer statements answer the first question only approximately and offer a useful clue about the third.
