Bethesda revealed and released it on April 22, 2025, in a same-day launch.
What the “next month” claim said—and when
The headline phrasing circulated in December 2024 as a report about a possible reveal the following month. It did not establish an official reveal date. By March 13, 2025, Push Square reported that leaker NateTheHate was saying a reveal and release were targeting April, with little time between them and a shadow drop possible. That was still a report about an unannounced game, not confirmation from Bethesda. Push Square’s March 13 report.
On April 15, VGC reported Jeff Grubb’s prediction that the game would shadow drop during the week of April 21. It remained unannounced at that point. VGC’s April 15 report.
What Bethesda announced
Bethesda Game Studios announced and launched The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22, 2025. The reveal and release happened on the same day, broadly matching the later reports of a short gap and possible shadow drop. That outcome does not mean the original December “next month” wording predicted the final date precisely.

Bethesda was explicit about the terminology: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” The studio said development began in 2021 and described its goal as preserving the original experience while updating it for modern technology. What changed in the remaster
The released game retains the original’s core, while its presentation and selected systems were updated. Xbox Wire says Unreal Engine 5 supplies the visual treatment while the game keeps the core of the original Creation Engine title. Bethesda describes updated art, animation, visual effects, world assets and game systems; its overview also notes collaboration with Virtuos and recreated combat animations. These are studio descriptions, not independent performance measurements.
Xbox Wire lists gameplay and quality-of-life changes including revised leveling, encumbrance and enemy scaling; a redesigned HUD, menus and map; accessibility enhancements; extra autosaves; and changes to camera behavior. Platforms and editions
At launch, Xbox Wire listed Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC through Steam and the Xbox App for Windows, and cloud play. It was available day one with Game Pass and supported Xbox Play Anywhere. Bethesda’s news page now includes Nintendo Switch 2 patch notes dated August 11 and September 17, 2026, documenting a later version for that platform. The useful correction is that the rumor concerned a possible reveal, while Bethesda’s eventual announcement was for a remaster—and it launched on announcement day, April 22, 2025. The later April timing reports were closer to the outcome than the December headline’s specific “next month” framing. Bethesda’s own wording settles the remake-versus-remaster distinction for this release.
