For an early free horse in Oblivion Remastered, go to Chestnut Handy Stables outside the Imperial City and speak with Snak gra-Bura. Ask about something useful to do to start the Horse Armor quest, then tell her you want a horse and will take any horse. She gives you her old horse with steel armor at no charge, according to a Remastered-specific walkthrough updated April 25, 2025.
How to get the free horse early
- Travel to Chestnut Handy Stables, outside the Imperial City.
- Speak with Snak gra-Bura and ask about something useful to do to start the Horse Armor quest.
- When she asks what kind of horse you want, say you are not fussy and will take any horse.
The walkthrough reports that Snak gives you her old horse, fitted with steel armor, for free. Chestnut Handy Stables is outside the Imperial City’s western gate, according to a stable-location guide. PCGamesN’s walkthrough and Gamer Guides’ stable list describe the route and location.

Receive one during the main quest
A later free route comes after you deliver the Amulet of Kings to Brother Jauffre at Weynon Priory. The same walkthrough reports that this main-quest progression provides a horse.

Horse armor: what is included and what costs extra
Horse armor is separate from getting a horse. PowerPyx reports that Snak gra-Bura can add steel or elven armor to a legally owned horse for 500 gold. Bethesda lists the Horse Armor Pack among the game’s included content; its Deluxe content adds unique digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon horse armor sets. Can you call your horse?
No whistle or shout summons a horse, according to the walkthrough. If you leave yours behind, it waits at a stable. Stables are spread around Cyrodiil; the Gamer Guides stable list can help locate them.

- Want a horse early without spending gold? Visit Chestnut Handy Stables and accept Snak’s horse.
- Already progressing the main quest? Deliver the Amulet of Kings to Brother Jauffre for the later free route.
- Prioritizing speed and have gold to spend? The cited guide names the Black Horse in Cheydinhal as fastest, with the White Horse in Anvil as its second-fastest choice.
Bethesda’s current edition information lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Its June 30, 2026 Switch 2 announcement says that version launched August 11, 2026 and lists the Horse Armor Pack with the Standard Edition; the Deluxe Edition adds unique digital armor and weapon content, including horse armor. The Deluxe upgrade requires the base game.
