The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered brings a major visual overhaul, but that fidelity can come with performance trade-offs. Whether it runs well for you depends on your platform, hardware, settings, and tolerance for reduced visual quality. Bethesda’s published materials explain the available trade-offs; they do not provide a current, matched frame-rate comparison between the original and remaster across platforms.
Why the remaster looks different
Bethesda describes the remaster as a visual overhaul built with Unreal Engine 5. Its changes include recreated assets, more detailed character models, real-time lighting, atmospheric effects, improved landscapes, and updated lip sync. Xbox Wire also calls out new foliage among the presentation changes. These are descriptions of the intended upgrade, not independent measurements of image quality or grass density.
The project is a remaster rather than a remake. Bethesda Game Studios said on April 22, 2025: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” The core game remains, alongside Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, but the changes go beyond visuals: Bethesda’s extended look describes sprinting, revised locomotion and combat animations, a changed third-person perspective, a redesigned leveling system, updated UI/UX, and newly recorded dialogue.
That scope helps explain the title’s grass metaphor: a richer presentation is part of the appeal, but it does not mean every platform delivers the same image or performance. The available official material does not establish a controlled, apples-to-apples comparison of grass rendering between the 2006 release and the remaster.

Why visual quality can affect performance
Bethesda’s PC graphics-settings guidance says higher quality can reduce performance. Its adjustable options include foliage quality, view distance, shadows, global illumination, textures, reflections, and post-processing. The support guidance also identifies resolution, shadows, and global illumination as settings that can affect performance. Lowering them may help, but Bethesda does not promise a particular frame rate on any given PC.
Upscaling can be another option where supported. Bethesda lists DLSS, FSR, and XeSS choices, while noting that available technologies depend on hardware. Hardware ray tracing support is also GPU-dependent. These are configuration options, not guarantees that a specific setup will run smoothly.

What performance and quality modes mean
On consoles where the choice is available, Bethesda documents a Performance/Quality setting that favors either performance or visual fidelity. Performance mode is the setting Bethesda recommends trying when troubleshooting low FPS. Xbox Series S does not have this toggle. On PC, the approach is more granular: adjust individual quality settings rather than relying on that console choice.
Choosing performance may mean accepting visual compromises; choosing quality prioritizes fidelity and may make performance more demanding. Which balance feels better is subjective, and Bethesda’s descriptions do not establish a universal best mode or a platform ranking.

How to troubleshoot low FPS
- On a supported console, try Performance mode. Use the in-game Performance/Quality choice if your console offers it. Xbox Series S does not offer this toggle.
- On PC, reduce demanding settings. Try lowering resolution scale, shadow quality, global illumination, foliage quality, or view distance, then assess whether the image-performance balance suits you.
- Consider supported upscaling. If your hardware offers DLSS, FSR, or XeSS, test an available mode; support and results depend on your system.
- Restart after changes. Bethesda’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the game after adjusting settings.
These steps follow Bethesda’s general recommendations; they cannot guarantee a particular frame rate or eliminate every hitch on a particular system.

Bethesda announced Update 1.2 on July 16, 2025, saying it included performance fixes across platforms. That confirms performance was addressed in that update, but it does not establish current frame rates or show that every performance issue was resolved. Likewise, a general launch statement about 60 frames per second is not a measured guarantee for every platform or current build.

How to decide whether it is worth playing
If you value updated visuals and quality-of-life changes, the remaster offers more than a sharper coat of paint while retaining the original game’s core and expansions. If stable performance matters more than visual detail, first check the options available on your platform and whether your PC supports the settings or upscaling you want. There is not enough matched, current evidence here to say that one platform universally runs best, quantify a performance penalty against the original, or promise that changing settings will solve every issue.
Before changing hardware, try tuning the settings you already have. The right trade-off is the one that makes the game feel good to play on your own setup.
