The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered launched on April 22, 2025. A March report that it could arrive before June—and perhaps as soon as April—proved broadly accurate, but the released game is officially a remaster, not a remake. Bethesda says it aimed to preserve the original game while presenting it through modern technology.
What happened to the “sooner than expected” forecast?
On March 12, 2025, VGC reported that insider NatetheHate expected the then-unannounced Oblivion project to release before June. VGC added that its own sources said it might arrive as soon as April. Those were reports about an unannounced project, not a release date confirmed by Bethesda. VGC’s March 2025 report
The forecast’s April window matched the outcome: Xbox announced the game’s arrival on April 22, 2025. The official Xbox listing gives the same date. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement · Xbox game listing
What is the game officially called, and is it a remake?
Bethesda and Xbox call the released game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda directly addressed the distinction at launch: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” Bethesda’s launch statement

That official wording matters because the March rumor coverage and headlines used “remake.” The project that shipped was presented by Bethesda as a remaster, with the original game’s core retained rather than described as a wholly new game built from scratch.
What does Unreal Engine 5 do in the remaster?
Xbox Wire says the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 for its new visual style while keeping the original game’s core intact. That supports describing Unreal Engine 5 as part of the remaster’s visual presentation; the official announcement does not say the entire game was newly rebuilt as a standalone Unreal Engine 5 remake.
