The Arcane University is the documented Mages Guild route; a Remastered walkthrough also reports access through Frostcrag Spire.
Where to find a spellmaking altar
Arcane University
The original Oblivion PC manual places the Altar of Spellmaking in the Praxographical Center at the Arcane University in the Imperial City. It says access is tied to Mages Guild rank. A Remastered walkthrough describes earning recommendations from the other city guild halls and reaching Apprentice rank to use this route. See the Bethesda game hub and Bethesda’s Remastered introduction for official game information; the walkthrough’s precise access steps are third-party reporting.
Frostcrag Spire
The Beebom walkthrough reports a second route at Frostcrag Spire after buying its Magetallow Candles Box. It gives a price of about 3,200 coins, but that figure is guide-reported and may vary by version or circumstances; check the in-game listing rather than treating it as a guaranteed price. Bethesda confirms Wizard’s Tower is included in Remastered content, but its announcement does not establish this altar’s access requirements or current price.
How to create a custom spell
- Open the altar. Use an available Altar of Spellmaking at the Arcane University or Frostcrag Spire route described above.
- Select known effects. The original game manual says spellmaking is limited to magical effects your character already knows. Choosing an effect adds it to the spell.
- Configure each effect. Set the relevant magnitude, duration, and area. The Remastered walkthrough also identifies range choices of Self, Touch, and Target. The options available depend on the effect.
- Review feasibility. Before creating the spell, inspect the interface’s Magicka cost, gold creation cost, available gold, and required casting skill. The original manual warns against making a spell that exceeds your available Magicka or skill.
- Create and test the spell. If the displayed costs and requirements work for your character, create it and try it in an appropriate situation.
The detailed official spellmaking instructions available here come from Bethesda’s original Oblivion PC manual, not a Remastered-specific manual. Treat those core rules as foundational, and follow the live Remastered interface if its labels or behavior differ.

How spell settings affect cost and use
Think of a custom spell as a set of effects plus parameters, not simply a name. Stronger magnitude, longer duration, and broader area can increase Magicka cost. Range determines whether an effect applies to the caster, a nearby target, or a target at a distance. Combining effects can make a spell more versatile, but it can also make the spell harder to afford or cast. Check the altar’s displayed numbers for the specific design rather than assuming a particular combination is efficient.
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Effect combination | Only effects your character knows can be selected, according to the original manual. |
| Range | The Remastered walkthrough identifies Self, Touch, and Target choices; select the one that fits the intended use. |
| Magnitude | Sets effect strength where applicable; increasing it can raise Magicka cost. |
| Duration | Sets how long an effect lasts where applicable; a longer duration can raise Magicka cost. |
| Area | Sets an effect’s radius where applicable; a larger area can raise Magicka cost. |
| Magicka cost | Compare the displayed requirement with the Magicka your character can spend. |
| Gold creation cost | Check the altar’s displayed gold cost and your current funds before committing. |
| Required skill | Confirm your character meets the displayed casting-skill requirement. |
Examples of custom spell ideas
Beebom suggests builds such as pairing Weakness to Fire with Fire Damage, combining Fortify Health with Shield, or using a short Paralysis effect alongside Damage Health. These are illustrative recipes from that walkthrough, not verified optimal builds or guarantees of damage, affordability, or compatibility. Check the altar’s cost and skill display for your character before creating any of them.

Custom spells can also serve practical utility needs. Bethesda Support notes that Feather or Fortify Strength effects temporarily increase maximum encumbrance. That guidance explains their use, but does not provide spellmaking instructions.

Bethesda Game Studios’ September 17, 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 Patch 1.1 notes report a fix for a crash when players quickly used the Altar of Enchanting or Altar of Spell Making to add an enchantment or spell effect to an item. The notes also mention a crash involving repeatedly casting a custom Bound spell and using Wait. These are Switch 2 patch-specific fixes; they do not document a change to spell-creation rules across platforms.
