OBS vs FFmpeg for a Nonstop Sleep Ambience YouTube Stream

OBS offers GUI control for a sleep ambience loop; FFmpeg offers a scriptable command-line loop. Both still need YouTube-compatible settings and a plan for outages.

Choose OBS if you want a visual interface for scenes, overlays, and hands-on changes; choose FFmpeg if you want a compact, repeatable command-line loop and are comfortable maintaining the process. Both can repeat prerecorded ambience, but neither loop setting alone makes a stream reliable around the clock: the computer, power, network, and a monitoring and restart plan still matter.

OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits a sleep ambience stream?

Decision OBS FFmpeg
How you configure it Build a scene and add a Media Source or VLC Video source. Set the input, looping, encoding, and destination with command-line options.
Looping prepared media Enable the Media Source’s Loop property for a local file. A VLC Video source can play a playlist; Loop Playlist is documented as on by default. Use the input option -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely.
Best fit Creators who want visible production controls or expect to change scenes and visual layers. Operators who prefer a fixed, scriptable file-to-stream pipeline and can maintain the process.
Recovery from a failure Not established by the loop control; plan separately for crashes, restarts, power loss, and network interruptions. Not established by the loop option; process supervision and recovery require separate, system-specific setup.

The documented features establish that both tools can loop media, not that either is categorically more stable. OBS’s source documentation covers media types and looping; FFmpeg’s command-line documentation defines input looping and real-time pacing. OBS Media Sources · FFmpeg documentation

Prepare the ambience video and the YouTube stream

Check the file and your rights

Use a video and audio track you have the right to broadcast. A sleep stream may run for a long time, but duration does not change the need to clear the music, recordings, artwork, and other material in it. YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not grant rights to third-party content. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for your channel and material before going live; do not assume that looping or making minor edits makes reused material yours.

Keep the file available locally for OBS or FFmpeg, and note its resolution, frame rate, and codec. If you use multiple tracks, check that transitions do not create silence, clipping, or abrupt changes at the loop point. Test the exact file you intend to broadcast rather than a short substitute.

Configure YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings to obtain the stream key and server details. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in a shared script.
  2. Use an ingest protocol supported by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, described by YouTube Help as a secure extension to RTMP. Select the matching server URL and key in your encoder.
  3. Choose a supported codec and set a constant bitrate (CBR), frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval compatible with YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The available bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  4. Before the real broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and monitor the stream during the test; use an upload speed that can sustain the selected output reliably.

For H.264, YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended examples: 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps; and 1080p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps. These are recommendations, not universal minimum upload-speed guarantees. The page provides separate recommended rates for other codec and frame-rate combinations, and its guidance can change. Set up a looping stream in OBS

  1. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast. Add any static artwork, visual layers, or overlays you need; keep the scene simple if the aim is a steady ambience loop.
  2. In the scene’s Sources box, choose + and add Media Source. Give it a recognizable name.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop, then browse to the local ambience video. OBS documents Loop as off by default; its description says the file plays again when playback completes. Supported listed video types include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
  4. If you need a sequence of files, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default for this source. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  5. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube, and enter or connect the stream key using the method available in your OBS version. Then configure the output codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval to match the YouTube ingest settings selected for the stream.
  6. Start a private or otherwise suitable test, confirm that the picture and audio reach YouTube, and watch stream health. Check that the file returns cleanly to its beginning and that any playlist advances as intended before relying on it for an extended broadcast.

OBS’s official source guidance documents the loop behavior and formats, but it does not quantify CPU use or promise uptime. The loop repeats the media; it does not by itself restart OBS after a crash or restore a failed internet connection. OBS Media Sources documentation

Loop a file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an infinite input loop. It is an input option, so put it before the corresponding -i. For file input streamed in real time, -re paces reading at the file’s native rate and is equivalent to -readrate 1. Do not apply that pacing indiscriminately to an actual live input.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "ambience.mp4" [encoding and RTMPS output options] "[YouTube RTMPS ingest URL and stream key]"

This is a command shape, not a complete copy-and-run command: fill in the encoding and destination options for your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, YouTube server, and stream key. The exact FFmpeg build, encoder availability, and ingest configuration affect those options. Keep credentials private, and verify the command against the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version rather than assuming a loop option supplies YouTube-compatible output.

  1. Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder you intend to use, and confirm the input file plays locally.
  2. Set the input options before -i. In particular, place -stream_loop -1 there so it applies to the file input; use -re when pacing a file for live output.
  3. Add output options that match YouTube’s selected ingest settings: codec, CBR rate control, bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds per YouTube’s guidance).
  4. Set the output destination to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key, taking care not to expose the key in logs, screenshots, or shared scripts.
  5. Run a test stream, check audio and video at YouTube, and watch stream health. Keep the process in the foreground during initial verification so you can see errors.

The loop option repeats input; it does not constitute a restart policy or monitoring system. FFmpeg documents real-time pacing and looping, but recovery after a process, host, power, or network failure depends on additional operating-system configuration that varies by setup. FFmpeg command-line documentation

Keep a stream running—and know its limits

A continuous broadcast relies on more than the encoder. A local OBS or FFmpeg setup depends on a powered computer, stable upload connection, and a way to detect and handle failures. Decide in advance who will notice a stopped stream and how it will be restarted; the loop switches described above do not handle those events by themselves. The cited tool documentation does not specify a universal reconnect command or recovery interval.

  • Check upload headroom: the selected bitrate must be sustainable on your connection. A speed test is useful, but does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
  • Plan for the archive: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours; plan recordings and archive needs accordingly.
  • Review rights and channel rules: confirm that you can broadcast the audio and visuals and that your channel’s content meets YouTube’s current requirements. The encoder settings do not resolve copyright or reused-content questions.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check Next action
The video plays once and stops in OBS Media Source Loop is off; OBS documents it as off by default. Open the source properties, enable Loop, and test playback through the end of the file.
VLC Video is missing in OBS VLC is not installed or does not match OBS architecture. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS.
FFmpeg exits after one pass The loop option may be missing or placed after the input it should affect. Place -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i and test again.
YouTube reports poor stream health Output parameters may not match the selected ingest settings, or upload may not sustain the bitrate. Check codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and connection stability; use YouTube’s health messages to narrow the issue.
The stream stops after a computer or connection failure Neither media loop is a full recovery system. Restore power or connectivity, restart the encoder as needed, and establish monitoring and a system-specific restart plan.
The broadcast runs longer than 12 hours and no archive appears YouTube’s cited encoder instructions only state automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer uninterrupted broadcast; arrange an appropriate recording workflow and check current YouTube guidance.
