The report attributed the change to holiday demand falling short of expectations, particularly in the United States. Nintendo’s published sales figures provide context, but do not confirm that specific production plan.
What production cut did Bloomberg report?
Bloomberg said Nintendo’s planned output for the quarter would drop by 2 million units, from 6 million to 4 million—about one-third. The report, citing people familiar with the matter, described a plan rather than a production figure Nintendo had officially announced. The quarter refers to the period covered by Bloomberg’s March 24 report; it should not be read as a current production update. Bloomberg’s report

Why was production reportedly reduced?
Bloomberg attributed the reported adjustment to year-end holiday demand coming in below Nintendo’s expectations, especially in the US. That explanation comes from the report’s unnamed sources, not from an official statement by Nintendo. It is a regional-demand claim: Nintendo’s global sales totals alone cannot establish how US demand performed.
What do Nintendo’s official figures show?
Nintendo’s company-published results offer important context on sales and forecasts, but they do not verify the reported quarterly production cut.

| 17.37 million | Switch 2 sell-in for the third quarter | Nintendo, February 2026 briefing. Nintendo said it had strengthened production capacity for the console’s first holiday season to reduce the risk of stockouts. Nintendo’s February 2026 briefing |

The earlier launch period was also marked by strong demand: Nintendo reported more than 10 million cumulative global sell-in units as of September 30, 2025, and said some regions had shortages. It described the total as the highest global first-four-month sales figure for a dedicated Nintendo video game platform. That launch-period result does not establish demand during the later holiday season. Nintendo’s November 2025 briefing
Does the report establish current stock or availability?
No. A historical production plan does not show how many consoles retailers have now, whether a particular store has stock, or whether a later production decision has been made. The cited Nintendo materials report sales, forecasts, and production capacity, but do not confirm or deny the exact March production plan described by Bloomberg.

Did Nintendo’s 2026 price changes explain the reported cut?
The cited price notice gives regional prices and effective dates, but does not connect them to Bloomberg’s earlier production report. Nintendo listed its Japanese-language-only system in Japan at 59,980 yen from May 25, 2026, and systems in the US and Europe at $499.99 and €499.99, respectively, from September 1, 2026. These are region- and date-specific prices, not evidence of the cause of the reported production adjustment. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 price notice
