OFF Remastered preserves the strange, unsettling journey that made Mortis Ghost’s 2008 RPG Maker 2003 game influential, while changing how it plays and sounds. Its fractured world and story are the main attraction; faster combat, added areas and bosses, and modern conveniences make this more than a visual update. But the new soundtrack is a consequential creative choice, and some puzzles and late-game stretches can test a player’s patience.
What is OFF about?
The official description says: “Take control of the Batter as he seeks to purify an uncanny and hopeless world haunted by specters.” The Batter travels through distinct, fractured zones, accompanied by the Judge, a philosophical cat. He encounters Elsen inhabitants and Spectres in a world that initially resembles a role-playing game’s familiar quest for purification—but increasingly unsettles that premise.
RPGamer’s review highlights fourth-wall breaks, a presence named by the player, and a world governed by guardians. As the journey proceeds, the apparent purpose of purification becomes morally and narratively uneasy. The story does not resolve into a simple heroic explanation; its cryptic details and interpretive quality are part of what lingers.
That oddness has roots in the game’s history. RPGFan describes the original as a French RPG Maker 2003 game released in 2008, with an unofficial fan English translation circulating in 2011. It became an influential example of the narratively unusual RPG Maker indie. The remaster supplies a revised official localization.

What the remaster changes
The official site presents this version as a substantial reworking rather than a higher-resolution port. Its additions range from combat and content to translation and usability.
| Area | What changes |
|---|---|
| Combat | An all-new battle system. RPGFan describes quicker, more strategic encounters, using an active-time bar and pausing when a party-command menu opens. |
| Areas and bosses | New areas and hidden bosses by Mortis Ghost; RPGamer notes six added bosses. |
| Music | A new soundtrack featuring Morusque and Toby Fox. The official site says Alias Conrad Coldwood’s original soundtrack remains available in the original release, not that it is included in the remaster. |
| Localization | A revised localization based on Quinn K.’s original French, with English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Japanese listed by the official site. |
| Convenience and presentation | Checkpoints, a hint system, accessibility features, updated menus, and updated animations. |
How do the changes affect the experience?
Combat moves faster, but is not the main draw
RPGFan finds the new combat quicker and more strategic than the original, with an active-time bar that pauses while a party-command menu is open. RPGamer also notes that party members have distinct roles. Together, these changes give battles more shape than a simple sequence of commands, but the reviewers’ strongest praise is for the world and story, not combat as a standalone attraction.

- BIG FUN, SMALL BOX: Fast setup, quick turns, and replayable modes packed into a compact box. Perfect for weeknights, travel, or casual groups who want a dungeon crawler without the bulk or burnout.
There is a pacing trade-off. RPGFan says repeated encounters and late-game backtracking become tedious, and considers the new secret-boss endgame underdeveloped. RPGamer, by contrast, finds the added bosses engaging. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way.
Exploration asks you to pay attention
Puzzles can hinge on details in books or backgrounds, and the game also includes occasional minigames. Close observation suits OFF’s unsettling atmosphere, but it can slow progress: RPGamer says some clues take time to decipher, while RPGFan points to puzzles, repeated encounters, and backtracking as sources of friction. The official hint system and checkpoints offer support, though they do not remove the need to explore and interpret.

- Beautiful remastered anime art with eyes and lips movement.
- Beautiful remastered event cgs with simple animation.
- Cute romance story with secret identity and transformation theme.
- Fully voiced in Japanese, including the heroine.
- Completely new background arts which replaced the old ones in the original.
The soundtrack changes the mood
The remaster’s new score is a major difference, not a neutral replacement. RPGFan prefers it overall, while recognizing the original music’s uniquely twisted atmosphere. RPGamer feels the original soundtrack has more expressive layers and describes the new one as sustaining a more consistently bleak mood. Those judgments point to different strengths rather than a single definitive winner: the new music changes the emotional texture, while the original remains tied to the 2008 release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does OFF Remastered’s story and atmosphere hold up?
For readers drawn to uncanny worldbuilding and stories that invite interpretation, that remains the game’s strongest case. Both RPGFan and RPGamer treat OFF’s presentation and narrative as its distinctive appeal: its zones, characters, and unsettling shifts make an ordinary-looking quest feel increasingly strange. The story’s resistance to easy explanation is a feature for players who enjoy puzzling over meaning, but a drawback for anyone looking for a clearly spelled-out plot.

The game’s age is felt less as a straightforward obstacle than as part of its identity: it belongs to a lineage of RPG Maker indies that used familiar RPG conventions to tell stranger stories. The remaster updates the mechanics and adds conveniences without, according to these reviews, displacing that central appeal. Still, neither the revised presentation nor the added content eliminates the original’s deliberate opacity or its uneven late-game pacing.
Where can you get OFF Remastered?
The official site lists digital versions for Steam and Nintendo Switch, as well as physical Nintendo Switch standard and collector’s editions. It does not establish current prices or stock, so check the official listings before buying. The remaster is the relevant choice for the new battle system, content, localization, and quality-of-life features; the original release is the place the official site identifies for Alias Conrad Coldwood’s score.
