Spoilers follow. If you tell Hugo the truth and then stall, he may die in the fight that follows, and the equipment reward dies with him. Hugo can also be released from the gaol without triggering that revenge branch, which is the safer route if you are not ready to chase Lanzo immediately.
Before you start
The quest follows “Mercy among Thieves,” which concerns the Coral Snakes. PowerPyx and GamesRadar both list it as a requirement, and PowerPyx also lists “Nation of the Lambent Flame.” Finish both before you head to Bakbattahl Gaol. The base game is the only version these guides cover, and they were published in 2024, so later updates may have shifted small details.

Where is Hugo in jail?
Bakbattahl Gaol sits northeast of Bakbattahl, above the palace. One route description says to pass the Dye Stores and follow the path to the gaol entrance. Hugo is held in a cell inside.
How do I offer Hugo guidance?
The quest’s listed objective is “Offer Hugo guidance.” A third-party game-data reference gives its premise: “Though he yearns for an honest life, banditry is all that Hugo has ever known. Now freedom is within his grasp, but he knows not what to do with it. Perhaps you can advise him?”

- Speak with Hugo in his cell.
- Talk to Brefft, the prisoner nearby, until he reveals that Lanzo killed Hugo’s parents and gives the Coral Snakes’ hideout at the Ancient Battleground.
- Return to Hugo. If he will not progress, go back to both conversations and exhaust the available lines. Guides disagree on whether Hugo’s dialogue must be exhausted before Brefft will talk, so this retry is the safe way to clear a stall.
The choice that decides his fate
Telling Hugo what Brefft said can make him go silent and sets the revenge branch in motion. From here you have two paths. The guides describe the rescue route as the standard one; the gaol release is a reported alternative.
Route A: Hurry to the Ancient Battleground
GamesRadar says to return the next day, learn that Hugo has escaped, and head straight for the Ancient Battleground. Do not sleep or make camp on the way. The same guide warns that Hugo may die if you delay, and that a delayed rescue is the failed outcome.

Route B: Release him from the gaol
GamesRadar mentions freeing Hugo with a Gaol Key or by fighting the guards. PowerPyx describes a staged bribe to Ekratt instead, paying in increasing amounts with a wait between attempts:
- 1,000 G
- 2,500 G
- 5,000 G
The guides do not state how long the wait between attempts lasts. Treat this as a documented alternative rather than the only valid method.

Where is Lanzo?
Lanzo and his Coral Snakes members are at the Ancient Battleground, which lies north of Checkpoint Rest Town. Enter the northern fortress and climb to the upper level. Defeating Lanzo before Hugo’s fatal outcome gives him a chance to survive. Guides report that he may arrive after the fight and ask what to do next. PowerPyx notes that players have disputed the exact sequence of these events, so treat the order below as the commonly documented route rather than a guaranteed trigger.
How do I give Hugo a future?
When Hugo asks what to do, GamesRadar gives the response sequence as “Live an honest life,” then “I do,” then “I know of a place that might.” Those lines lead to the honest-job branch. If you skip this sequence, Hugo may survive but leave without any employment direction.

Jobs from earlier side quests
Where Hugo ends up depends on how you resolved two earlier side quests. The guides describe these roles differently, so read them as options rather than a guaranteed position for Hugo.
- “Short-Sighted Ambition” with the bad outcome can leave Isaac’s shop without its merchant, opening a shop job option.
- “Every Rose Has Its Thorns” with the good outcome can open an option associated with the Rose Chateau.
Rewards by outcome
GamesRadar (2024) reports 7,000 gold and 4,500 XP for the survival route, along with Frosted Edges and a White Leather Kerchief. PowerPyx (2024) lists 7,000 G and the White-Leather Kerchief for the outcome where Hugo sets off on his own. The table shows what each source states.
