Offbrand announced its publishing arm, Offbrand Games, in June 2024, naming PirateSoftware creator Jason “Thor” Hall its director of strategy and Aether Studios’ Rivals 2 its first publishing partner. The launch framed the label as a way to connect creators more closely with game developers; Offbrand’s current description emphasizes selective, term-limited publishing deals and developers retaining their intellectual property.
What Offbrand announced in June 2024
Offbrand CEO and cofounder Nick Allen presented Offbrand Games as a new chapter for the creator-led production company. Allen said the goal was “to deepen creator ties to game developers and create mutually beneficial partnerships for all involved” in his launch announcement. GamesBeat’s June 10, 2024 report described Offbrand as co-founded by Ludwig Ahgren and Nathan Stanz, among others.
The announcement also said Offbrand would partner with Hall on a game jam planned for July 17, 2024. That date and Hall’s appointment describe the launch-era plan, not necessarily current arrangements.
What creator-led publishing meant for Offbrand
At launch, the idea was to use Offbrand’s relationships with online creators to help games reach audiences, while building partnerships with developers. The sources describe that positioning, but do not provide contract terms or comparative financial data that would establish how Offbrand’s model differs in practice from every conventional publisher.

Offbrand’s current About page says the company is fully privately owned, has no outside investors or quarterly shareholder targets, and has decision makers work directly with developer partners. It says Offbrand publishes a small number of games each year, uses term-limited publishing agreements, and leaves developers with full ownership of their IP and freedom around future projects. These are Offbrand’s stated policies, not independently verified outcomes for every deal.
The company says its publishing services can include press, porting, localization, storefront support, festivals, QA, playtesting, funding, business development, and community support. Offbrand also reports releasing three to five titles per year. Its page lists more than $11.8 million in gross revenue, more than 1.4 million wishlists added, and more than 430,000 units sold; it does not state the reporting period for those figures.

Why PirateSoftware joined—and what his role was
Hall, known online as PirateSoftware, was named director of strategy when Offbrand Games launched. Allen’s announcement positioned the appointment alongside the company’s aim of deepening ties between creators and developers. The announcement does not spell out Hall’s specific duties or establish that he remained in the position after launch.
Offbrand’s launch announcement and GamesBeat’s contemporaneous coverage document his appointment in 2024. Later search results reported that Hall left Offbrand in 2025, but the surfaced departure account was secondary and no primary confirmation was found. It is therefore not established here whether Hall is currently affiliated with Offbrand.

What was Offbrand Games’ first game?
Offbrand’s first announced publishing partnership was with Aether Studios for Rivals 2, the sequel to Rivals of Aether. GamesBeat described it as the label’s first title. It is listed on Steam as Rivals of Aether II, with an October 23, 2024 release date; the Q4 2024 timing in the original launch coverage was an expectation at the time, not a current release forecast. Aether Studios CEO Dan Fornace described the appeal in a testimonial hosted on Offbrand’s site: “While the services of traditional publishers aren’t right for everyone, getting the word out about your game has never been more important.” He added that Offbrand could help its studios and games find new players “without limiting their potential.” This is a partner’s endorsement on the publisher’s own page.

What happened to the worker-cooperative plan?
GamesBeat reported in June 2024 that Offbrand had announced plans to transition to a worker cooperative, with full-time employees receiving a vote, control, and an equal share of a profit pool. Offbrand’s current About page describes the company as fully privately owned but does not explain how that description relates to the earlier cooperative plan. The available sources do not establish whether the transition was completed.
