- The error appears while adding a printer, printing, opening printer properties, or starting the Print Spooler: reinstall the correct OKI MICROLINE ESC/P driver first.

okescpu.dll is associated with the legacy OKI MICROLINE ESC/P dot-matrix printer-driver family. It is a driver component, not a general-purpose Windows runtime used by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or games.

The file is associated with the prnokcl1.inf printer package and related GPD, manifest, and pipeline configuration files. Public package inventories connect this driver family with OKI models including the ML1190, ML5100FB, and ML6300FB. The exact package depends on your printer model, Windows edition, architecture, and the driver version available for that system.
Some public file records list a 32-bit build numbered 0.3.1536.0 and sized at approximately 0.19 MB. Other records list different 64-bit builds. Treat those records as identification clues, not as a reason to select and copy a particular DLL.
A printer driver is normally staged and serviced as a package through Windows’ Driver Store, commonly beneath:
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
That is why replacing one file often leaves the real problem untouched.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact OKI printer driver
This is the most likely repair when the error appears during printing or printer setup.
Identify the printer model
- Look at the label on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Write down the exact printer name and model.
- If the printer is not listed, check its physical label or the documentation supplied by your organization.
Go to the official OKI support site, search for that exact model, and download its ESC/P Printer Driver for your Windows architecture. Do not select a package merely because it contains a similarly named DLL.
The official ML1190 support page, for instance, identifies an ESC/P printer-driver package and separates 32-bit and 64-bit Windows support. Availability differs by model and region.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
Most current installations are 64-bit, but do not assume that the operating system alone determines which printer component is required. Windows can use a 32-bit printer component in some situations, provided the complete driver package and calling process are compatible.

Use the package that the printer manufacturer lists for your model and Windows installation. Do not choose a DLL architecture from a file-index page.
Remove the broken printer entry
Before reinstalling, remove the damaged queue:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected OKI printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If the installer refuses to proceed because an older driver remains, use Windows printer-management tools carefully:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the old OKI driver on the Drivers tab.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
- Restart the computer.
Only remove a package you have positively identified as belonging to the obsolete OKI printer. Removing a shared package can affect other queues.

- Close printing applications.
- Right-click the OKI driver installer.
- Select Run as administrator if that option is available.
- Follow the manufacturer’s setup steps.
- Connect or select the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device if the installer did not create the queue.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL message, printer properties open normally, and a test page reaches the printer. If the same error returns, the package may be incompatible with your Windows release, incomplete, or blocked by security software.
When manually hunting through old driver versions, it is easy to install the wrong architecture or leave several stale packages behind. Fix 2: Let Windows reinstall the printer
If Windows has a compatible driver available, removing and re-adding the printer can rebuild its staged package.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
- Open the printer’s properties and print a test page.
For a USB printer, disconnect the cable while restarting and reconnect it when Windows asks for the device. For a network printer, confirm that the computer and printer are on the same network.

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the model-specific ESC/P package from OKI instead. A generic driver may provide basic printing but may not support every printer feature.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this path when Windows has broader corruption, not just one broken printer package. These commands do not replace a missing OKI driver package, but they can repair damaged Windows components that prevent driver installation or servicing.

First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Do not close the window while either scan is running.
What the results mean
- “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM repaired or verified the component store.
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected system files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC made repairs. Restart and try the printer again.
- SFC could not repair some files: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If the printer error remains, return to the complete OKI driver reinstall rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

Antivirus software may remove a legitimate driver component, or it may correctly detect a tampered file. Filename matching alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the printer driver.
- Review the detected file path, threat details, and action.
- If the file came from an official, digitally signed OKI or Microsoft driver package, verify that origin before taking action.
- If you cannot verify it, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from OKI.
Do not disable Defender to force an installation. Do not restore a random replacement DLL simply because its name is okescpu.dll. Reinstalling the complete package is safer because Windows can validate and stage its related files together.
Fix 5: Check the driver through Device Manager
Device Manager is useful for identifying a failed printer device, although printer packages may also be managed from Printers & scanners.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer appears.
- Look for the OKI device or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select the Driver tab to review the installed driver.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a known compatible source.
- If the device appeared after a recent bad update, use Roll Back Driver when Windows enables that button.
- If necessary, select Uninstall Device, restart, and reinstall the official model package.
Do not uninstall unrelated chipset, audio, graphics, or storage drivers while troubleshooting this printer component.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
A command such as this is commonly suggested online:
regsvr32 okescpu.dll
It is not a generic DLL repair command. regsvr32 works when a DLL implements the registration interface Windows expects, including DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver component does not become functional merely because it was registered.
If the command reports that the entry point was not found, that does not identify the original problem. The correct action is to reinstall the complete signed printer-driver package, not to try different copies of the command.

Also avoid copying the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
or into an application folder. That can create architecture mismatches, signature problems, version conflicts, and servicing failures.
Advanced checks when reinstalling fails
Check the Print Spooler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Confirm that its status is Running.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try opening the printer properties again.
If the spooler repeatedly stops, inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Applications and Services Logs.
- Open Microsoft > Windows > PrintService.
- Review the Admin log around the time of the failure.
The log may show whether the failure is tied to the OKI package, a permissions issue, or another spooler component.
Consider legacy-driver compatibility
Older OKI dot-matrix printers may rely on a legacy third-party driver model. Microsoft is moving Windows toward newer printer-driver approaches, including IPP-based printing, and legacy driver availability may change across Windows releases.
If OKI does not list a package compatible with your current Windows version, test the printer with Windows’ available compatible driver. If essential features are missing, contact OKI or the administrator responsible for the printer rather than installing an unverified DLL.
Use System Restore only after a recent system change
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, application installation, or Windows change:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Back up important work.
- Start the restore.
System Restore can reverse applications, settings, drivers, and some updates. It does not replace a backup and may remove changes made after the selected point.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched build, or a modified file. Even a genuine-looking copy may not include prnokcl1.inf, catalog files, GPD files, manifests, or pipeline data required by the printer driver.

Is okescpu.dll a Windows system DLL?
