refiebar.dll errors usually appear as: “The program can’t start because refiebar.dll is missing from your computer.” refiebar.dll is a legacy Microsoft Office component, not a Visual C++ runtime or ordinary Windows system DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches your situation:
- Office is still installed: run Office Repair first.
- You use an older Office 2003 or 2007 installation: restore the Research Explorer Bar through Office setup.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error appeared after removing Office: reinstall Office or remove the obsolete Research feature from the remaining registration.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the DLL may exist but have a missing dependency.
- You no longer use Internet Explorer or the Research sidebar: remove the feature instead of replacing the file.
- The problem began after a major system change: try System Restore.
- Windows itself has corruption symptoms: use DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to restore an Office-owned DLL.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32.

What refiebar.dll actually does
REFIEBAR.DLL is the Microsoft Research Library Explorer Bar. It supplied the Research button and sidebar in Internet Explorer and connected that interface to Office Research Library information services.

It was associated with Microsoft Office 2003 and Office 2007-era installations. Historical file records report 32-bit builds and examples such as versions 11.0.5510.0 and 12.0.6606.1000, but those records are not a universal manifest for every Office installation.

Typical locations include:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12
The last path is common when 32-bit Office runs on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Office 2003 is no longer supported, and Internet Explorer 11 was retired from supported Windows use. Microsoft documents the relevant lifecycle status for Office 2003 and Internet Explorer 11. Repairing this component can restore an old Office feature, but it does not make Internet Explorer a supported modern browser.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
This is the safest first repair when Office is still installed. Office setup can restore missing files, repair registration, and reinstall components using the correct architecture and product source.

Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run Office
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Click Repair and allow Office to close applications.
Quick Repair is faster, but Online Repair is the better choice when a file is missing or the installation is damaged. Microsoft’s current instructions are in Repair an Office application.
Restart Windows when the repair finishes, then repeat the action that produced the error. If the message disappears, Office restored the component or rebuilt the registration that was calling it.
MSI-based Office
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If Repair is unavailable or fails, select Change again and look for the feature-selection screen described below.
Fix 2: Reinstall the Research Explorer Bar in older Office
On compatible MSI-based Office installations, the component may be an optional Office feature rather than part of the basic installation.

appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Choose Add or Remove Features.
- Expand Office Tools.
- Find Research Explorer Bar.
- Set it to Run from My Computer.
- Continue through setup and provide the original Office media if requested.
- Restart Windows.
This is the correct way to restore the file because Office installs the matching DLL, dependencies, registry entries, and Internet Explorer extension registration together.
If the feature is not listed, your Office edition may not support that setup path, or the installation source may be incomplete. In that case, repair or reinstall the complete Office product using the original licensed media or Microsoft’s supported installation process. See Microsoft’s Office uninstall and reinstall guidance.
Do not mix REFIEBAR.DLL from Office 2003 with Office 2007, or copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system directory.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A legitimate Office DLL can be removed if security software detects corruption, suspicious behavior, or an unusual legacy component. That does not automatically prove the detection is false.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
refiebar.dll. - Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.
Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:
- The original path is an Office directory.
- The file came from your genuine Office installation.
- Office Repair or the original installer can restore it.
- You have checked the detection rather than blindly allowing it.
Microsoft warns that allowing unsafe files can expose the device. Its explanation of this process is available in Protection History.
The safer recovery is usually to remove the quarantine entry only after confirming the source, then run Office Repair so the file is restored from an installation source rather than from an untrusted copy.
Fix 4: Decide whether you should remove the feature instead
If you do not use Internet Explorer’s Research sidebar, restoring it may be unnecessary. This component is not required for normal Windows operation, and it is not a general dependency for modern Word, Excel, or Outlook installations.
Use the Office feature-management steps above and set Research Explorer Bar to Not Available, then complete setup. If Office has already been removed, uninstall leftover legacy Office components through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Do not manually delete the historical CLSID or registry entries just to silence an error. Removing the feature through Office setup lets the installer clean up its own registration.
Fix 5: Understand “module not found” correctly
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that refiebar.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load a dependency, or the Office registration may point to a path that no longer exists.
Check the likely Office directories:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Office
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Office
If the file is present, do not copy it elsewhere. Repair Office anyway, because the failure may involve a missing dependency, damaged COM registration, or mismatched Office architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 32-bit Office installation on 64-bit Windows needs its 32-bit companion files. Installing a 64-bit replacement DLL will not repair a 32-bit Office extension.
Do not use random DLL downloads or regsvr32
Avoid websites offering standalone DLL downloads. A replacement can contain malware, belong to the wrong Office generation, use the wrong architecture, or simply leave the damaged Office registration untouched. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts and DLL hijacking risk.
Rank #4
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL installer. Although this file was used as a COM-style Internet Explorer extension, a supported Microsoft procedure confirming a manual regsvr32 refiebar.dll repair was not established. Running the command against an arbitrary download is therefore not a reliable fix.
Use Office Repair or Office setup instead. Those methods restore the file and the surrounding configuration as one installation.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
Because refiebar.dll belongs to Office rather than the protected Windows file set, SFC is not the primary repair. Use these commands when Windows Update, system files, or multiple built-in Windows components are also malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Microsoft documents both tools in its guidance for Windows component repair and System File Checker.
Running these commands repeatedly will not recreate an Office DLL if Office’s own installation source is missing.
When manually hunting through component stores and repeating scans leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling the Office feature remains the definitive fix for this specific file.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after software removal, an update, or a cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error appeared.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft explains the process in System Restore.
Best Value
Create a backup of important files first. System Restore may remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point, although it is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged Office suite.
Driver troubleshooting is usually irrelevant
refiebar.dll is not a graphics, audio, chipset, capture, or storage driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it, and changing GPU or motherboard drivers should not be your first response.
If the same Windows installation also has device failures, update drivers through:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the affected device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
For a broad driver audit where manually identifying stale versions across many devices is the painful part, Outbyte Driver Updater can show reported driver issues; the free scan identifies them, while driver installation requires the full version. It will not replace the need to repair the Office installation that owns refiebar.dll.
Prevention and safe cleanup
- Keep a backup of old Office installation media and license information.
- Do not combine DLLs from different Office releases.
- Do not place Office files in Windows system directories.
- Review antivirus quarantine before allowing a legacy file.
- Remove obsolete Office features through Office setup rather than deleting registry entries.
- If the Research feature is no longer needed, uninstall the legacy Office component instead of maintaining it.
- Avoid registry cleaners that claim to repair missing DLLs.
FAQ
Is refiebar.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Office-installed component associated with Internet Explorer’s Research Explorer Bar.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No supported evidence identifies it as a Visual C++ runtime file. Treating it as a Visual C++ problem sends the repair in the wrong direction.
Is refiebar.dll malware?
The genuine component is a Microsoft Office file, but a filename alone does not prove authenticity. Verify its Office-directory location and restore it through Office setup rather than trusting a downloaded copy.
Does Windows 11 need it?
Windows 11 does not need this legacy Office feature for normal operation. If an old Office installation still invokes it, either repair that installation or remove the unused Research Explorer Bar.
Should I run regsvr32 refiebar.dll?
No, not as a first repair. Registration details and dependencies should be restored by Office Repair or the Office installer.
Why does SFC not fix it?
SFC checks protected Windows files. refiebar.dll is associated with Office, so SFC normally cannot restore it from the Windows component store.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
